Sports Team Aircraft Charter in Africa
Aircraft charter for sports teams in Africa
For a club, federation or national team travelling in Africa, the aircraft must be considered alongside the delegation, equipment, match schedule and recovery time. A charter flight allows a programme to be assessed around the group's needs, subject to aircraft availability and the applicable permits. From our Paris office, IBC Aviation coordinates the assessment with operators and relevant partners.
Planning a fixture or a series of matches? Request an assessment for your delegation, even if some timings are still to be confirmed. For a large group, you can also send us the details by email.
Build the flight schedule around the match
The flight is one part of the journey. Arrival plans should allow for the transfer to the hotel, training and the team's desired rest period. After the match, extra time, sporting obligations and departure from the stadium may all affect when the delegation can assemble for the return flight.
For clubs participating in the CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup, the competition calendar provides a starting point. Match times, airport restrictions and crew availability must then be confirmed for each leg.
- Before the match: latest acceptable arrival, training session, transfer and hotel check-in.
- After the match: preferred departure time, acceptable margin and whether an overnight stay is possible.
- For the crew: duty time, rest and the options the operator can assess if the programme changes.
A late return is subject to airport hours and permissions as well as crew duty limits. We have these points checked before confirming the programme.
Which aircraft can carry the players and staff?
Player numbers alone do not determine the aircraft. Coaches, medical staff, equipment managers, officials and any accompanying guests must also be counted. IBC Events presents group charter solutions on aircraft with 19 to 189 seats, depending on the individual aircraft's configuration and availability.
- Embraer 145: up to 49 seats in the configuration presented by IBC, subject to confirmation for the proposed aircraft.
- Dash 8-Q400: up to 78 seats in the configuration presented, subject to availability and route feasibility.
- Larger airliner: an option to assess for an extended delegation or several groups travelling together.
As a fictional planning example, 23 players, 12 staff members and 4 officials make a party of 39. A 49-seat aircraft may be considered, but seats alone do not guarantee space for every equipment case. The operator must confirm hold capacity, take-off weight and the constraints of the route.
Team kit, medical equipment and batteries
Separate individual luggage from shared equipment in the inventory: kit, balls, training supplies, cameras, medical devices and equipment cases. Provide the number, dimensions and weight of each item. An aircraft with spare seats may still lack the hold space or payload for all the cases.
Spare camera batteries and power banks must be protected and carried in the cabin, subject to applicable limits and operator approval where required. The IATA guidance on dangerous goods helps prepare the declaration. Advise us of medical devices and other special items before the flight is confirmed.
Domestic and international flights: checking traffic rights
A fixture may require a domestic leg, a flight between two African countries or an arrival from another continent. Each itinerary is assessed individually: airport access, ground handling, overflight and landing permits where required, and passenger documentation.
For paid transport between two points within one country, the operator's traffic rights must be checked. Article 7 of the Chicago Convention recognises states' right to refuse certain cabotage operations by foreign aircraft. This does not mean all domestic flights are prohibited: the answer depends on the operation and authorisations obtained.
Our team coordinates these checks with the operator and local partners. Share your match cities and dates with IBC Aviation so that both directions of travel can be assessed.
How much does a sports team charter cost?
The price is provided by quotation. It depends on the available aircraft, route, passenger numbers, baggage and the time the aircraft is committed. Two trips to the same fixture can attract different offers if the aircraft waits on site in one case and needs repositioning in the other.
To compare proposals, request a breakdown of positioning flights, airport handling, parking, crew expenses, any ground transfers and included services. Ask for the change and cancellation conditions too. Taxes and services vary by quotation and should not be assumed to be included.
Plan your team's trip with IBC Aviation
Our Paris office gathers the details and reviews proposals with operators: passenger and baggage capacity, route feasibility, schedules and commercial conditions. For a national team, tell us if players will join from different cities. For a club, provide training times and the margin desired after the match.
Share the dates, departure and arrival cities, passenger count for each leg and the equipment already identified. We can then clarify the missing details and assess a solution to or from the competition venue.

Frequently asked questions
Which aircraft can be chartered for a football team in Africa?
The choice depends on the full delegation, equipment cases, route and airports. A 49-seat Embraer 145 could be considered for a group of 39, provided hold capacity and flight performance are confirmed. The aircraft remains subject to availability.
Can a national team organise several collection points?
Yes, a multi-stop itinerary can be assessed. We need to know who boards and leaves at each stop, then check traffic rights, airports and crew duty time. Depending on the constraints, more than one solution or aircraft may be required.
Can a team fly immediately after a match?
Only if the programme allows it. Departure from the stadium, the delegation's obligations, airport hours and crew duty time must be compatible. A margin and contingency option can be considered, without guaranteeing automatic availability.
How long will the team’s flight take?
Flight time depends on the airports, aircraft and conditions on the day. The operator confirms an estimate for each leg. The programme must also allow for transfers, formalities and a margin after the match.
How much does an aircraft charter for a sports team cost?
A quotation is prepared for the route, aircraft, passengers, equipment and mission costs. Ask for a breakdown of positioning, ground handling, parking, included services and change conditions when comparing offers.
Can the team's equipment travel on board?
Yes, subject to its dimensions and weight and the aircraft's hold capacity. Spare batteries and some medical or technical equipment are subject to specific rules. Send the inventory before the flight so that the operator can approve it.
