Around 6,000 km once the track goes round Sudan

The great-circle distance from Dubai to Lagos is about 5,900 km. Drawn on a map, the shortest line runs over Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Chad before entering Nigeria in the north-east. The Sudanese stretch is the one that changes the flight plan.

EASA's conflict zone bulletin on Sudan, extended on 24 July 2026 until 31 January 2027, rates the risk as high at all altitudes in the Khartoum FIR and recommends not flying over the country. An operator that follows it plans around Sudan, which brings the distance flown to around 6,000 km. Allow about 7h30, or 7h15 to 8h15 depending on the aircraft, the winds and the routing.

Westbound, the clock works for you. Leave Dubai at noon and you land in Lagos at around 16:30 local time; an overnight departure from Lagos at 22:00 reaches Dubai at around 08:30.

If you leave from DXB: ACL slot, DCAA permission and a peak-hour premium

Most private jets leave from Al Maktoum, where our Dubai office is based and where these rules do not apply. They come into play when your schedule requires Dubai International.

Dubai Airports' conditions of use for general aviation, in force since 29 October 2023, allow no movement at DXB without a slot from the coordinator ACL and prior landing permission from the DCAA. Requests go through one of the two designated FBOs, ExecuJet or Jet Aviation. Within 24 hours of the flight, the airport operations control centre handles them instead of ACL.

The departure hour also has a price. Slots in the departure peaks, 07:00 to 12:00, 14:00 to 16:00 and 20:30 to 23:30 Dubai time, carry a 50% premium: a mid-morning take-off for Lagos pays it, a noon departure does not. If the aircraft waits in Dubai for the return, a jet with a wingspan of 24 metres or more parked beyond 24 hours must be towed to its FBO's apron or repositioned to Al Maktoum.

Into the Emirates from Lagos: papers before boarding

The UAE government portal u.ae, updated on 13 July 2026, grants visa on arrival to citizens of several countries only. Other travellers apply before departure, with a passport valid for at least six months. The same portal notes that visas arranged by UAE airlines require flying with them. A private jet passenger therefore applies through a hotel or a licensed agent in the Emirates, or online with ICP or GDRFA Dubai.

For regular trips, the five-year multiple-entry tourist visa is open to all nationalities on self-sponsorship: 90 days per visit, extendable by a further 90 days, with health insurance valid in the UAE and an onward or return ticket.

At DXB, the FBO answers for the documents of the passengers it brings in. A passenger refused entry must leave within 24 hours, on the next available flight, private or commercial. We therefore check each passport against the current rules before the flight is filed.

Into Nigeria from Dubai: e-Visa letter, landing card, health form

Visitors apply before boarding, since Nigeria no longer grants visas on arrival. The Nigeria Immigration Service emails an e-Visa approval letter carrying a QR code, to be printed and shown at the port of entry. Its business single-entry class allows 30 days on an invitation letter from a Nigerian company, together with the company's CAC certificate. Families and teams may file as a group of up to 10 people, and no e-Visa class can be extended.

Two online forms complete the file: the landing card, mandatory for every passenger entering Nigeria since 1 May 2025, and the health declaration listed by the UK Foreign Office. The same advice mentions a yellow fever certificate. For the aircraft, NAMA's clearance is filed online no later than 24 hours before the day of the flight. For a charter, the NCAA, Nigeria's civil aviation authority, also requires its own flight clearance and collaboration with the holder of a Nigerian Air Travel Organiser's Licence (ATOL), under Part 18 of its regulations. Global 5000, Falcon 900LX, Falcon 7X or Global 6000

Both categories fly the route nonstop. The choice turns on the number of passengers and on whether you intend to sleep aboard.

• Heavy jet, enough for the trip: the Global 5000 offers 9,000 km of range and up to 14 seats; the Falcon 900LX flies 8,800 km with six passengers. From €6,500 per hour.
• Ultra-long-range, for the night flight: the Falcon 7X, about 11,000 km, takes four berths including two double beds; the Global 6000 reaches 11,700 km. From €9,000 to €12,000 per hour.

A super midsize jet, credited with 4h30 to 6h30 of range, would have to land in a third country. The other cabins appear in our ultra-long-range fleet.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't a Dubai to Lagos flight follow the straight line?

Because the straight line crosses Sudan. EASA's conflict zone bulletin, valid until 31 January 2027, recommends not flying over the country at any altitude. Routed around it, the flight covers around 6,000 km in about 7h30.

Can a UAE airline arrange the visa of a private jet passenger?

No. The UAE portal u.ae states that one of the conditions for an airline-arranged visa is flying with that airline. A private jet passenger applies through a hotel or a licensed agent in the Emirates, or online with ICP or GDRFA Dubai.

What happens if a passenger is refused entry at Dubai International?

The FBO must remove the passenger within 24 hours, on the next available flight, private or commercial, to the airport of origin or to a country that will admit them. Dubai Airports' conditions of use make the FBO responsible for passengers' documents before arrival.

Which documents does Nigeria ask of a visitor flying in from Dubai?

A passport valid for at least six months, the printed e-Visa approval letter with its QR code and the landing card completed online. The UK Foreign Office also lists a health declaration and a yellow fever certificate. Visa on arrival is no longer available.
