Private Jet to India: Permits, Airports and Weddings

India by private jet, a matter of lead time

India has several gateways for business aviation, each with a dedicated terminal and customs. The table below sums up the main hubs and their constraints.

Permits, customs and cabotage: the real Indian question

This is where a broker earns its place. Every foreign non-scheduled aircraft must obtain prior approval from the DGCA (India's civil aviation authority), issued as a reference number, the YA number, carried on the flight plan. The minimum lead time is 3 working days (flight on the 4th day), and can reach 7 working days for flights from certain prior-reference countries, including China and Pakistan. A local sponsor letter is generally required.

Two rules shape every trip. First, entry and exit must be through an international airport or a notified customs aerodrome, with customs, immigration and a general declaration. Second, cabotage is prohibited: a chartered foreign aircraft may not pick up passengers at one point in India to set them down at another. Domestic legs run on an aircraft registered or duly permitted in India; a one-off exemption can be requested from the DGCA. Our teams assemble the full file, from permit to sponsor. On this, see the added value of a charter broker.

Rajasthan weddings: Udaipur and Jaipur

Udaipur (UDR) and Jaipur (JAI) are the gateways to Rajasthan's palace weddings, whose prime season runs from November to February, outside the monsoon. Udaipur, the city of lakes, lines its palaces and heritage hotels along the water; its runway suits light and midsize jets. Jaipur, the Pink City, has customs and immigration and serves as northern India's international entry point.

In peak season, airport parking fills up: after drop-off, an aircraft often has to reposition to a nearby airport, then return for the pick-up. That is logistics we anticipate from the enquiry stage, slots and parking included.

Mumbai, Delhi and the tech south

Mumbai (BOM) remains the country's leading business hub, with a general aviation terminal at Kalina that has customs, but its parking is heavily limited and overnight stands increasingly constrained. Since September 2020, Delhi (DEL) has had a general aviation terminal dedicated to non-scheduled flights, with 57 parking stands and integrated customs. Both airports are saturated: slots and parking are booked well ahead.

Further south, Bangalore and Hyderabad, India's technology capitals, offer business aviation services with customs and immigration; Hyderabad opened a dedicated terminal in September 2024. Goa is split between two airports: Manohar / Mopa (GOX) in the north, opened early 2023, and Dabolim (GOI) in the south, a civil enclave on a naval base, with the constraints of a military field.

From Europe and the Gulf: which jet, which access?

From Europe (Paris, Geneva, London), the nonstop to Delhi or Mumbai calls for a heavy jet or an ultra-long-range aircraft, for around 8 to 9 hours of flight: a long-range Falcon, Global or Gulfstream. From Dubai or the Gulf, 3 to 3.5 hours is enough, within a midsize jet's reach. For a shorter runway such as Udaipur, a light to midsize aircraft is preferred, validated case by case. These times are indicative and vary with aircraft, winds and payload. Our ultra-long-range jets cover the direct links from Europe.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a permit to land a foreign private jet in India?

Yes. Every foreign non-scheduled aircraft must obtain prior approval from the DGCA, issued as a reference number (the YA number) carried on the flight plan. The minimum lead time is 3 working days, rising to 7 working days for flights from certain prior-reference countries. The broker handles the entire file.

Can you chain several Indian cities with the same foreign jet?

Not by default: the rules prohibit cabotage, meaning picking up passengers at one point in India to set them down at another with a chartered foreign aircraft. Domestic legs run on an aircraft registered or permitted in India. A one-off exemption can be requested from the DGCA.

Which airport for a wedding in Udaipur or Jaipur?

Udaipur (UDR) and Jaipur (JAI) are the gateways to Rajasthan's weddings, ideal from November to February. Jaipur has customs and immigration; Udaipur has a shorter runway better suited to light and midsize jets. In peak season parking fills up, and an aircraft may need to reposition.

How long is the flight to India by private jet?

Allow around 8 to 9 hours from Europe to Delhi or Mumbai in a heavy or ultra-long-range aircraft, and around 3 to 3.5 hours from Dubai or the Gulf. These times are indicative and vary with aircraft, winds and payload.

Can you park overnight in Mumbai or Delhi?

It is increasingly constrained. Mumbai and Delhi are saturated and overnight parking is limited. An aircraft often has to reposition to a secondary airport after drop-off. Slots and parking are booked ahead; our teams take care of it.
