About 5,000 km, and no time difference from March to October

The great-circle distance from Farnborough to Lagos is close to 5,000 km, slightly more from Luton. Allow 6h15 to 7h00 in the air, depending on the aircraft and the winds. That sits comfortably inside heavy jet range and at the very top of the super midsize category, rated at 4h30 to 6h30 of range.

Nigeria stays on UTC+1 all year. British Summer Time is also UTC+1, so from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October both cities read the same hour. Take off from Farnborough at 09:00 in July and you land in Lagos at around 15:30; the same departure in January lands at around 16:30, local time.

Farnborough shuts at night, Luton opens with limits

Which London airport you use depends on when you land. The UK AIP sets Farnborough's hours at 07:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays, local time, with prior permission required and customs by arrangement. The airport, dedicated to business aviation, closes on 25 and 26 December.

Those hours shape the northbound leg. Leave Lagos at 23:00 in summer and you are over England at around 05:30, before Farnborough opens. To touch down there at 07:00 on a summer weekday, take off from Lagos no earlier than about 00:30. In winter, with Lagos an hour ahead, make it 01:30.

Luton stays open at night under the same AIP, customs and immigration included, but not for everyone. From 1 June to 30 September 2026, its scheduling declaration allows no ad hoc movement, business aviation included, between 23:00 and 06:59; the rest of the year, night ad hoc flights draw on a limited reserve, 870 movements for winter 2026-27. Into the UK: a GAR for the aircraft, a visa for Nigerian passports

Every international private flight to the UK is declared to Border Force through a General Aviation Report, submitted between 48 and 2 hours before departure. Permission to enter can be granted remotely, before anyone leaves the aircraft. Two rules bite on an overnight from Lagos: a flight delayed to the next calendar day needs a new report, and so does a change of arrival airport known before take-off, Farnborough to Luton for instance.

Nigeria is on the UK's visa national list. A Nigerian passport holder therefore needs a visa before travelling, for any purpose, whatever the aircraft. The electronic travel authorisation, or ETA, concerns only visa-exempt nationalities, and a British or Irish passport needs neither. Nigeria: aircraft clearance 24 hours ahead, visa before take-off

On the Nigerian side, the air navigation agency NAMA takes aircraft clearance requests online, through registered handling agents, at least 24 hours before the day of operation. The permit number comes back by email and text message. For a charter, the NCAA, Nigeria's civil aviation authority, adds a flight clearance of its own, and a foreign airline must work with the holder of a Nigerian Air Travel Organiser's Licence (ATOL), under Part 18 of the Nigerian regulations.

For passengers, the UK Foreign Office advice on Nigeria, last updated on 20 August 2026, leaves little room. Visa on arrival has ended: every application goes through the online portal before travel, and holders of a CERPAC or a Green Card need no visa at all. A yellow fever certificate is compulsory, except for infants aged 8 months or younger and adults aged 61 or older.

The Nigeria Immigration Service runs an e-Visa class for Nigerians by birth who travel on another passport, a British one for example. Six and a half hours fit easily into the heavy jet category, rated at 6 to 9 hours of range.

Private jet hire London Lagos: an hourly rate, no total

London to Lagos is quoted by the flight hour, with no set fare. The reference is the category rate, from €6,500 per hour in a heavy jet. Beyond flight time, a quote varies with where the aircraft is based, how long the crew waits in Lagos and any positioning legs. Our private jet rental rates set out every category.

An aircraft that has just dropped its passengers in Lagos sometimes heads back to Europe empty, and the reverse happens too. These empty legs suit flexible dates and are rarely confirmed far ahead.

Abuja or Accra, about an hour further

Lagos also works as a first stop in the region. Count about an hour of flight to Abuja, the federal capital, or to Accra, depending on the aircraft. Frequently asked questions

Can an overnight flight from Lagos land at Farnborough?

Only once the airport opens: 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, local time, according to the UK AIP. Leaving Lagos at 23:00 in summer would bring you over England at around 05:30. The departure then moves to about 00:30, or, outside the 1 June to 30 September period, the flight lands at Luton at night with an ACL slot.

Does a Nigerian passport holder need a UK visa to arrive by private jet?

Yes. Nigeria appears on the visa national list of the UK Immigration Rules, which requires a visa before travel for any purpose. The ETA applies only to visa-exempt nationalities. Flying private changes nothing, and the GAR lists every passenger for Border Force.

Can a British citizen born in Nigeria get a visa on arrival in Lagos?

No. The UK Foreign Office states that visa on arrival is no longer available and that applications are made online before travel. The Nigeria Immigration Service offers an e-Visa class for Nigerians by birth holding a foreign passport, for stays of up to 30 days.

What should stay out of the luggage for Lagos?

The UK Foreign Office lists jewellery and precious metals among the goods that are illegal to import into Nigeria, along with items such as beer and textile fabrics. On the way home, African art, antiques in particular, cannot leave the country without written authorisation from the Department of Antiquities.
