Private Jet to the Maldives: Airports, Transfers and Flight Times

An archipelago built for privacy

The Maldives form an archipelago of twenty-six atolls and about 1,190 coral islands, in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka. The country built its reputation on a simple principle: one island, one resort. Each property occupies its own private island, which explains the level of privacy sought by a demanding clientele. More than a hundred and fifty resort islands are spread across the atolls, from overwater villas to beach residences.

Which airport for a private jet in the Maldives?

Malé International Airport, or Velana (MLE), is the country's main gateway. Its 3,400-metre runway takes wide-body airliners as well as business jets, with no restriction for ultra-long-range aircraft such as the Bombardier Global 7500 or the Gulfstream G650. A new passenger terminal opened there in July 2025, and the airport has a VIP terminal and dedicated private-aviation handling that ease the formalities on arrival and departure.

Further north, Maafaru Airport (NMF), inaugurated in December 2019, offers an alternative with its 2,200-metre runway. It serves as an access point to the upscale resorts of Noonu Atoll and takes most business jets, although its shorter runway can limit some aircraft taking off at full load.

Reaching your island: seaplane or speedboat

Once in Malé, one last leg separates you from your island. Three options exist, depending on the distance:

  • the speedboat, available at any hour, for resorts close to Malé;
  • the seaplane, operated by Trans Maldivian Airways, the largest seaplane operator in the world, for the more distant atolls;
  • a domestic flight followed by a speedboat, for the farthest islands.

One point deserves attention: seaplanes generally fly in daylight, between sunrise and sunset. For a same-day seaplane transfer, it is therefore best to land in Malé by mid-afternoon. In the case of a late arrival, you have two options: spend a night in Malé before continuing the next morning, or choose a resort reachable by speedboat, which runs at night. Our teams anticipate this logistics from the moment the flight is planned.

Flight times from the IBC offices

The Maldives are more accessible than they seem, especially from IBC Aviation's bases in the Middle East and Asia. From our Dubai office as from our Bangkok office, expect about four hours of flight. From Europe, a long-range jet reaches Malé nonstop.

From Distance to Malé Approximate flight time
Dubai about 3,040 km about 4 h
Bangkok about 3,160 km about 4 h to 4 h 30
Nice about 7,790 km about 9 h to 9 h 30
Geneva about 7,950 km about 9 h to 9 h 30
Paris about 8,280 km about 9 h 30 to 10 h

These times are indicative and vary with the aircraft, the winds and the payload. From Europe, the nonstop link requires an ultra-long-range aircraft. A mid-size jet will need a technical stop, often in the Middle East. To choose well, see our comparison of heavy jets and ultra-long-range jets.

When to go

The Maldives climate follows two seasons. The dry season, roughly November to April, offers clear skies and a calm sea: it is the most popular period, and the most in demand. The wet season, from May to October, comes with higher humidity and passing showers, for lower visitor numbers and often gentler rates. The climate stays warm all year round.

Entry formalities

The procedures are simple. A thirty-day visa is issued free of charge on arrival for most travellers. Before departure, an online declaration, the IMUGA form, must be completed within the ninety-six hours before arrival. The local currency is the rufiyaa, but the US dollar is accepted at most resorts. The time difference is five hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+5).
