Saint-Émilion by private jet, via Bordeaux-Mérignac 54 km away

Three airfields surround the medieval village, and only one offers the two things a business jet arriving from abroad needs: a long runway and permanent customs.

Libourne, 15 km from the village but not for a jet

Libourne-Artigues-de-Lussac airfield, 11 km north-east of Libourne, is open to public air traffic. Its visual landing chart nevertheless limits it to visual flight and domestic traffic, with no tower or information service: crews announce themselves on a self-information frequency, in French only.

The 1,100 m paved runway, 20 m wide, declares only 950 m for landing on runway 04 and 851 m on runway 22, on a pavement rated at strength 6. There are no customs or police. The pump serves only 100LL avgas for piston engines, on weekdays or with 48 hours' notice.

Business aviation is not excluded: the chart asks it to give the operator, the joint authority running the Libourne-Saint-Émilion airport zone, 24 hours' notice. Without jet fuel or an instrument approach, a chartered jet rarely goes there, and the AIP also warns of strong turbulence in north to north-westerly winds.

Bordeaux-Mérignac: a 24-hour parking limit on commercial aprons

Ten kilometres west of Bordeaux, Mérignac keeps air traffic services, customs and police open day and night. Its two runways, 3,100 and 2,415 m long, place no length limit on business aircraft. Ground handling is mandatory.

The AIP names two general aviation handlers, AVIA VIP and Alyzia Province, and sets a rule worth knowing before a stay: private aircraft may park no more than 24 hours on the commercial aprons, with the airport's agreement obtained through the handler. For a week among the vines, we secure the stand with the handler or plan for the aircraft to return to base and reposition later.

Two operating details complete the picture: jet fuel is available from 04:30, and between 22:00 and 06:00, thrust reversers may be used beyond idle only for safety reasons. Our article on the FBO, or private terminal, describes the ground side of the trip.

Bergerac, the other gateway 60 km away

For a flight from London or Geneva, Bergerac Dordogne Périgord remains an option, with its 2,205 m runway and customs that require advance notice. The 2022 classification: 85 estates, two Premiers A

The Saint-Émilion Grand Cru classification, revised every ten years, dates from 2022. It recognises 85 estates: 2 Premiers Grands Crus Classés A, Château Figeac and Château Pavie, 12 Premiers Grands Crus Classés and 71 Grands Crus Classés, according to the Saint-Émilion wine council.

The two appellations, Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, cover 5,400 hectares across the eight communes of the Juridiction and part of Libourne, with more than 800 estates. UNESCO inscribed the Juridiction as a World Heritage cultural landscape on 2 December 1999, the tourist office notes.

The Jurade, founded in 1199 and revived in 1948, parades twice a year: for the Spring Festival on the third Sunday of June, and for the Ban des Vendanges on the third Sunday of September. Sooner, the Salon des Vignerons de Saint-Émilion takes place on 28 and 29 November 2026.

For the night, Hôtel de Pavie, a Relais & Châteaux member, has 24 rooms and suites in three houses in the village; its restaurant, La Table de Pavie, with a menu signed by Yannick Alléno, holds two Michelin stars for 2026 according to Relais & Châteaux.
