G7 Évian 2026: what the summit meant for business aviation in Geneva
The 2026 G7 in Évian: a summit under very high security
France took over the rotating G7 presidency in 2026, following Canada in 2025. The leaders' summit brought heads of state and government together in Évian-les-Bains from 15 to 17 June 2026. The Haute-Savoie spa town thus becomes the first French municipality to host a summit of this rank twice, after the 2003 G8.
Évian sits on the French shore of Lake Geneva, facing Lausanne, about 40 km from Geneva as the crow flies and under an hour by road along the southern shore. Because the lake is shared between France and Switzerland, a summit held on French soil immediately mobilises the Swiss authorities: Geneva Airport (GVA), the region's main international airport, remains the natural gateway for delegations, and therefore the sensitive point of the air and security plan.
What airspace restrictions applied around Geneva during the G7?
The Swiss Federal Council approved a temporary airspace restriction over the Lake Geneva region, in force from Wednesday 10 June at 13:00 to Thursday 18 June at 03:00, an eight-day window bracketing the summit. The area covered Évian, Lausanne and Geneva Airport. Surveillance was provided by the Swiss Air Force, in coordination with the Geneva cantonal police and the French Air and Space Force, with combat-aircraft patrols over the Lake Geneva arc. Drones and model aircraft were banned for the period.
The restriction targeted above all general aviation flying under visual flight rules (VFR) and non-commercial IFR traffic. The exact coordinates and altitudes of the zone were published by NOTAM: every crew had to refer to them before flying. The table below summarises the framework.
| Summit | G7, Évian-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie) |
| Summit dates | 15 to 17 June 2026 |
| Airspace restriction | 10 June (13:00) to 18 June (03:00) |
| Area affected | Lake Geneva arc: Évian, Lausanne, Geneva |
| Traffic targeted | general aviation (VFR) and non-commercial IFR |
| Surveillance | Swiss Air Force and French Air and Space Force |
| Drones and model aircraft | banned for the period |
| Geneva Airport (GVA) | open, scheduled flights maintained, heightened security |
Was Geneva Airport closed during the G7?
No. Geneva Airport kept its scheduled flights running throughout the period, while flagging possible schedule adjustments, reinforced checks and significant disruption to traffic and border crossings around the terminal. Official delegations transited through Geneva to reach Évian by road.
The sharpest impact fell on business aviation and general aviation. In practice, even where flights remained possible, take-off and landing slots and parking spaces were drastically reduced, and access was subject to prior permission (PPR). This is not specific to the G7: Geneva is one of Europe's leading business-aviation airports, behind Paris-Le Bourget, and already operates with structural slot and parking constraints in busy periods. An international summit simply amplifies that pressure. To understand the general logic of these constraints, see our feature on airport operational restrictions.
Why business aviation is the most exposed
During a summit of this kind, priority goes to state flights and security missions. General and business aviation end up at the back of the queue: airspace restrictions, narrowed time windows, parking saturated by the influx of aircraft, and reinforced security formalities. This is exactly what separates a well-prepared private flight from an improvised one in the middle of a sensitive period.
A broker's value is measured precisely in these situations: requesting slots and parking several weeks ahead, tracking NOTAMs in real time, and switching if necessary to a less exposed nearby airport. Aircraft choice remains a key parameter, depending on passenger numbers and distance; you can browse all categories in our aircraft fleet.
Alternative airports around Lake Geneva
When Geneva is saturated or under restriction, several airports in the region serve as a fallback for business aviation. They are not equivalent: Lausanne-Blécherette, too close to Évian, lies in the heart of the restricted zone and offers no relief. The genuine alternatives sit further out, beyond the core of the security perimeter.
| Airport | Distance from Évian | Profile |
| Geneva (GVA) | about 40 km | main hub, but in the heart of the zone |
| Lausanne-Blécherette (LSGL) | about 13 km | too close, inside the restricted zone |
| Annecy (NCY) | about 80 km | business aviation, outside the core |
| Sion (LSGS) | about 90 km | private aviation, private customs |
| Chambéry (CMF) | about 100 km | business aviation |
| Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (LYS) | about 150 km | full capacity, outside the zone |
The choice of fallback airport depends on passenger numbers, the type of aircraft and the acceptable road-transfer time to the final destination. In such a tight period, empty legs and one-way flights also become scarcer out of the area; to understand how they work and their limits, see our article on the empty leg flight.
The precedent of the 2003 G8 in Évian
The 2026 framework follows on from the June 2003 G8 in Évian, which had already upended regional aviation. At the time, a no-fly bubble of roughly 10 km radius was set up over Évian, complemented by a wider restriction zone of around thirty kilometres and by limits on the Geneva Airport area. Commercial flights were admitted only on prior request and security code, while Swiss F/A-18s and French Mirage 2000s patrolled over the lake.
The 2026 logic is identical, over a longer period: a protected core above Évian, an extended restriction ring taking in Geneva, general and non-commercial aviation kept out, and combined Franco-Swiss air policing. For anyone used to flying to or from Geneva, the message is clear: a summit of this scale is prepared weeks in advance.
How IBC Aviation handles your flights during a summit
As an independent broker, IBC Aviation operates no aircraft of its own: we compare the aircraft available on the market for your date and trip, then coordinate the whole operation. During a summit, that means anticipating slot and parking requests, tracking NOTAMs, and proposing a fallback airport around Lake Geneva if needed. Our Geneva office provides direct proximity to the region concerned.
To prepare a flight to or from Switzerland, see our dedicated page on private jet charter in Geneva and our Geneva airport profile. To understand how a quote is built, see the cost of renting a private jet, and for the general framework of our role, our private jet charter page. Frequently asked questions
When was the G7 held in Évian in 2026?
The G7 summit was held in Évian-les-Bains, in Haute-Savoie, from 15 to 17 June 2026, under the French presidency. It is the second time the town has hosted a summit of this rank, after the 2003 G8.
What airspace restrictions affected Geneva during the G7?
The airspace over the Lake Geneva arc (Évian, Lausanne, Geneva) was restricted from 10 June at 13:00 to 18 June at 03:00. General aviation under visual flight rules and non-commercial IFR traffic were targeted, under surveillance by the Swiss Air Force and the French Air and Space Force. Drones were banned for the period.
Was Geneva Airport closed during the G7?
No. Scheduled flights were maintained, with possible schedule adjustments, heightened security and ground disruption. Business aviation was the most constrained: reduced slots and parking, with access subject to prior permission.
Could you charter a private jet to or from Geneva during the G7?
Yes, under conditions, but slots and parking were very limited. Planning several weeks ahead, tracking NOTAMs and, where needed, switching to a nearby airport were essential.
Which alternative airports are there around Lake Geneva?
The main fallbacks, outside the core of the restricted zone, are Annecy (about 80 km), Sion (about 90 km), Chambéry (about 100 km) and Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (about 150 km). Lausanne-Blécherette, too close to Évian, lay inside the restricted zone.
Why does a summit in Évian affect Geneva Airport?
Évian sits on the French shore of Lake Geneva, about 40 km from Geneva. Geneva is the region's main international airport and the gateway for delegations, which extends the air-security framework over Geneva and the canton of Vaud, on the Swiss side.
