Private Jet to Caen: Carpiquet, D-Day and Millenium 2027

Owned by the Caen la Mer urban community since 2007, the airport has been run since 1 July 2025 by the Alliance consortium, under a five-and-a-half-year contract. The AIP names the Caen-Carpiquet airport operating company, SEACC, as manager.

Non-commercial traffic dominates. The French airports union, UAF, counted 18,173 non-commercial movements in 2025, more than four times the 4,184 commercial ones, for 307,860 passengers.

Runway 12: 1,600 m to land, and no ILS

The runway 12 threshold is displaced. As a result, the AIP cuts the landing distance to 1,600 m when landing towards the south-east, while it stays at 1,900 m on runway 30.

Guidance follows the same imbalance. Only runway 30 has a Category I ILS and a 420 m approach lighting system; runway 12 has neither, and its published approaches are RNP or VOR. With a firm south-easterly wind and a low cloud base, a jet therefore lands on 1,600 m without an ILS.

For a light or midsize jet the margin is generally sufficient, but a loaded long-range jet, or a departure for New York with full tanks, goes through a performance calculation. Non-Schengen customs: 24 hours on weekdays, 72 at weekends

Customs at Carpiquet work on notice, and the AIP leaves no room: any request that misses the deadline is refused. Monday to Friday, a non-Schengen flight is accepted from 6.30am to 10pm local time with 24 hours' notice. On Saturdays the window runs from 7.30am to 8pm, and on Sundays and public holidays from 8am to 10pm, with 72 hours' notice in both cases.

Outside those hours, a request remains possible 72 hours ahead, subject to approval. A New York to Caen flight touching down on a Saturday morning is therefore declared on Wednesday. The airport's customs declaration form goes back to the operator by email.

On the ground: a PPR number and stands limited to 24 m wingspan

Every non-scheduled flight that needs a parking stand must first obtain a PPR number, requested 24 hours ahead. Without it, the AIP states, air traffic control will not clear the aircraft. The notice drops to 2 hours when a user of the airport hosts the aircraft on its own apron, with no involvement from the operator.

Stands 7 to 10 take wingspans of up to 23.99 m, enough for a light or midsize jet. Stands 1 to 6, on the main apron, go up to 35.99 m but are reserved for scheduled flights unless the operator agrees, on 24 hours' notice: that is where a long-range business jet, often wider, is directed.

The 2026 fee guide covers the rest. Above 6 tonnes, handling is compulsory, with no airside self-handling, and it costs 50% more on Saturdays and twice as much on Sundays and public holidays. When the apron is busy, priority goes to scheduled flights, then medical flights, then to requests in order of arrival. For passengers, a VIP lounge opens directly onto the apron, and catering is ordered 48 hours ahead.

No extended hours for a positioning flight

The Carpiquet tower closes at 10pm on weekdays and at 8pm on Saturdays, local time. The AIP allows extensions, requested 72 hours ahead, but only for commercial flights: private flights, ferry flights and freight are refused.

A jet chartered from a certified operator counts as commercial air transport. Its empty positioning leg, however, is a ferry flight. We therefore fit arrival and departure within the published hours, all the more since fire cover is only maintained until the last scheduled flight. Its level 6 is booked 72 hours ahead.

Caen in 2027: Millenium and the 83rd anniversary of D-Day

From 1 January to 31 December 2027, Normandy marks a thousand years since the birth of William the Conqueror in Falaise, with nearly 1,000 events announced by Normandy Tourism. In Caen, the Gates of the Millenium, a free show, fill the cloister gardens of the Abbaye aux Dames from 20 to 27 February 2027, and the abbey hosts an exhibition on the Normans in the Middle Ages. The Musée de Normandie plans to show the Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo treasure from April to October 2027.

The 83rd anniversary of D-Day runs from 29 May to 13 June 2027 across the landing sector.
