Deauville-Normandie: a 2,550 m runway and customs by appointment

The airport sits in Saint-Gatien-des-Bois, and the French AIP points to Deauville, Trouville, Honfleur and Pont-l'Évêque for accommodation. Three kinds of traffic use it: seasonal holiday flights to the Mediterranean, business aviation and, less predictably, racehorses.

2,550 m to take off, 2,100 m to land

The 2,550 m figure applies to take-off. For landing, displaced thresholds cut the usable distance to 2,100 m on runway 12 and 2,130 m on runway 30, according to the French AIP in force in September 2026.

A light or midsize jet keeps a wide margin. A heavy jet lands here too. Its arrival weight, the temperature and the state of the runway feed the calculation the operator's crew signs off before departure, and we ask to see it before confirming any large cabin.

The Category I ILS serves runway 30 only.

Honfleur customs come out on notice, never on spec

Deauville-Normandie is an approved border crossing point, yet no customs officer is permanently posted there. The Honfleur unit attends on notice only: 24 hours from Monday to Friday, 48 hours on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Flights to or from a country outside the Schengen area carry one more formality, and London is one of them, since the United Kingdom has never been part of Schengen. The airport requires a General Declaration, the GENDEC, filed separately for arrival and for departure and sent to its operations team, as its PPR and customs page sets out.

The deadlines shape the week. A Tuesday flight is arranged on Monday; a Sunday return to London has to be arranged by Friday.

After 7pm in winter, no runway lights

The airport opens every day, from 8.30am to 8pm between 1 April and 31 October and from 9am to 7pm from November to the end of March. Those are French times, one hour ahead of London. A later arrival needs an extension, requested from the operator 48 hours in advance.

Without one, there is no night landing. The AIP states that runway lighting is unavailable outside tower hours, as there is no pilot-controlled lighting, and that the rescue and firefighting service is closed at those times.

The same 48 hours apply to level 6 or 7 fire cover, which the largest cabins may require, while level 5 is provided during opening hours.

Arqana sales: four dates before the end of 2026

Arqana's thoroughbred sales, run from its offices on avenue Hocquart de Turtot, fill Deauville's autumn. The official Arqana sales calendar lists:

• October yearling sale: 20 to 23 October 2026
• November yearling sale: 13 and 14 November 2026
• Autumn sale: 16 to 19 November 2026
• Breeding stock sale: 5 to 8 December 2026

In those weeks the scarce resource is ground space, not runway. The AIP describes a limited paved apron, subject to the operator's prior authorisation, and grass parking that may close in bad weather or when congested. We request that authorisation together with the customs notice.

A border inspection post for horses since 2013

In July 2013 the airport was approved as a border inspection post for horses, which allows it to receive animals from outside the Schengen area. It has a transit zone with ten boxes and a loading ramp for aircraft from the B737 to the A310.

Its website mentions around a hundred horses a year. Most are racehorses from Ireland and England for the major meetings at the racecourse, plus mares and foals heading for the region's stud farms. An owner can therefore bring in both the horse and the team through the same airfield, on two separate flights.

Phenom 300 or Citation XLS: sizing the cabin

On sectors of half an hour to an hour and a half, the runway rarely narrows the choice, and passenger numbers and luggage decide the cabin.

• London, in the order of 35 minutes from Farnborough: an Embraer Phenom 300, a light jet from €4,000 per hour, makes a same-day return realistic. Departure airfields are compared on our London airports page.
• Paris-Le Bourget, around 30 minutes: the same light-jet category.
• Brussels and Luxembourg, around 45 and 55 minutes: light or midsize, depending on the group.
• Geneva and Nice, around 1h05 and in the order of 1h25: for a larger party, a Cessna Citation XLS in the midsize category, from €4,800 per hour, adds cabin space.

Do Deauville customs attend a private jet without notice?

No. The Honfleur customs unit attends only on notice, 24 hours ahead on weekdays and 48 hours ahead on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For a flight outside the Schengen area, from London for instance, the airport also requires a GENDEC filed separately for arrival and for departure.

Can a private jet arrive at Deauville after dark?
