What the valley offers, area by area

Happo-One towers over the rest: the largest, the steepest, home of the Olympic downhill and of Freeride World Tour stops. Around it, Hakuba47 and Goryu for linked tree runs, Iwatake for the panoramas, Tsugaike for wide beginner terrain, Cortina for tree-line powder, down to confidential Kashimayari and Jigatake. The single Hakuba Valley pass covers them all, with shuttles between areas.

The snow is abundant and more alpine than Hokkaido's: pronounced relief, sustained verticals, backcountry with character. This is where skiers go when they want gradient as much as powder.

Three gateways, one arbitration

• Tokyo Haneda (HND), then about three hours by road or rail. The most direct from abroad, but the airport caps general aviation at 16 slots a day, with 24 hours' notice and parking limited to four nights: requests go in early.
• Tokyo Narita (NRT), easier on slots, at the price of a slightly longer drive towards Nagano.
• Matsumoto (MMJ), the mountain airport about an hour from the valley, restricted to light aircraft and small parties: the shortest door when the configuration allows it.

Building the trip

From Asia's hubs, Tokyo is 4 to 7 flying hours away depending on departure, in a heavy or long-range jet; a Falcon 7X also covers the sector from the Gulf.
