Against the TGV: 50 minutes in the air versus 2h11 at best

By rail, eleven trains a day run from Paris Est to Luxembourg station. The fastest takes 2h11 and the average is 2h33 over 387 km of track, with the first departure from Paris at 07:28 and the last at 20:25.

In a straight line, Le Bourget and Findel are 280 km apart. Both airports accept a take-off from 06:00: leave Le Bourget at around 07:00 and a 09:00 meeting in town is within reach. The jet wins the morning.

In the evening, you fly back to Luxembourg after the last train at 20:25, as long as the timing respects Findel's closure. For a fund board flying in from London or New York via Paris, that turns Luxembourg into a morning meeting rather than an overnight stay. The last evening flight is decided between 22:15 and 23:00

Flying from Paris to Luxembourg, both rules apply at once. The AIP closes Findel from 23:00 to 06:00 local time all year, exempting only state, search and rescue, humanitarian, hospital and distress flights and delayed scheduled services. With 50 minutes in the air plus taxiing, we aim for a take-off from Le Bourget at around 21:45, well ahead of the 22:15 limit in Paris.

The other way round, only Findel counts: a jet can leave it up to 23:00 and land at Le Bourget, which is open 24 hours and bans night landings only for jets not certified under Chapter 3, 4 or 14 of ICAO Annex 16. That shows on the aircraft's noise certificate, which Findel requires in any case.

After 23:00, Luxembourg's air navigation administration considers an individual, fully justified request to extend the curfew, and any non-scheduled take-off after midnight needs the minister's prior authorisation. We do not build a schedule around that exception.

Departure and arrival airports

• Luxembourg-Findel (LUX / ELLX): 6 km (4 miles) east of the city, a single 4,002 m runway, customs 24 hours a day. Handling is mandatory, and the request must arrive at least 6 business hours before the flight.

Flying without that prior permission exposes the operator to a surcharge of up to four times the handling fee and to refusal of later requests: it is the first thing we secure.
