Quimper-Pluguffan: almost no airlines, strict opening hours

Located 5.4 km (3 miles) south-west of the town, the airport has belonged to the Brittany Region since 2007, like those of Brest, Rennes and Dinard; SOGEAQC, a seven-person company, runs it and provides handling. The French airports union, UAF, recorded 697 commercial passengers in 2025, down from 18,764 in 2022, against 12,974 non-commercial movements, up 7.6%. No airliner to queue behind, then, but opening hours and notice periods, which we handle for you.

Flying in from London or Dubai: customs open May to September

The Quimper customs brigade attends on request, with 48 hours' notice, from May to September only: from October to April, a flight from London, Jersey or Dubai cannot clear customs there. Geneva, Brussels and Luxembourg are unaffected, since they stay within the Schengen area. In season, we file the notice as soon as the schedule is fixed.

In winter we route through Brest-Bretagne, whose tower runs around the clock and whose customs require 24 hours' notice on weekdays, 48 at weekends and 72 when a public holiday adjoins the weekend; the AIP rules out any clearance from the general aviation apron. We align those deadlines with the Brest handler, then the road or a short domestic hop completes the trip to Quimper.

In low cloud, a qualified crew makes the difference

Quimper has no ILS: the AIP publishes only satellite-guided RNP approaches, on runway 09 and on runway 27. The crew must therefore hold the approval for this type of arrival, whose minima sit higher, which matters when low cloud settles over Cornouaille; we check that approval before selecting the aircraft.

Declared distances also shorten the runway. A displaced threshold brings the landing distance on runway 09 down to 2,045 m, and a runway end safety area limits runway 27 to 2,113 m for both take-off and landing. Light and midsize jets work comfortably; for a loaded long-range jet, we obtain a performance calculation from the operator before offering it.

The runway is closed when the crosswind from 190° exceeds 25 knots on a wet surface, and night landings on runway 09 are prohibited if its slope indicator lights are out of service. On those days, we prepare the diversion and the road transfer that goes with it.

Arriving late or at the weekend: eight days' notice

The airport's 2026 fee guide sets the rule: every handling request is made in writing, 48 hours ahead, and opening outside published hours must be requested at least eight days before, failing which it depends on staff availability and carries surcharges. When several aircraft arrive at once, scheduled flights come first, then medical flights, then requests in the order received: we therefore file yours as soon as the flight is confirmed.

As for fire cover, level 5 runs on weekdays from 8am to 1pm and from 4pm to 5.30pm local time, with the 1pm to 4pm gap covered only on request; at weekends it stops at 5pm or 6pm depending on the day and the season. Outside those hours the airport drops to level 1, and we book the extension 72 hours ahead.

Fuel and frost: what we check before quoting

The two official sources disagree on fuel. The AIP lists Jet A1 on weekdays except Wednesday, from 8am to 4pm, then during fire cover hours or by NOTAM; the 2026 fee guide restricts refuelling to scheduled commercial flights and, with prior permission, to emergencies. We therefore confirm fuel before quoting, or have the return fuel carried from departure, within the aircraft's performance limits.

Winter calls for its own caution: no de-icing, no snow clearing equipment and no hangar for a visiting aircraft, and the AIP closes the runway in ice or snow. An early departure in frost is therefore planned the evening before, with an equipped alternate airport that we hold in reserve.

17 minutes from town, and the Festival de Cornouaille in late July

The airport publishes its own drive times: 17 minutes to central Quimper, 24 to Douarnenez, 35 to Concarneau and 55 to Lorient.

The Festival de Cornouaille, which grew out of the Fête des Reines created in 1923, fills Quimper every year at the end of July (23 to 26 July in 2026), squarely in the customs season. The same organiser runs MOD, a weekend devoted to Breton textiles, whose fourth edition takes place from 16 to 18 October 2026, with a runway show on Saturday 17 October at the Pôle Max Jacob.
