Born of an intergovernmental agreement between France and the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi opened on 11 November 2017, on Saadiyat Island. Conceived by Jean Nouvel, winner of the Pritzker Prize, it offers a universal reading of the history of art, where works speak to one another across cultures, eras and religions, within a single chronological journey.

The museum has established itself as a cultural landmark in the Middle East. It welcomed more than 1.4 million visitors in 2024, a record, and has passed 6 million visitors since opening, the large majority of them international. The agreement that links the museum to France, including the use of the "Louvre" name and the loan of works, has been extended to 2047.

Jean Nouvel's dome and the "rain of light"

The dome is the signature of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. About 180 metres in diameter, it is made of eight superimposed metal layers pierced with nearly 7,850 stars of varying sizes. When the sun passes through this lattice, it casts a shifting play of shadows on the ground, known as the "rain of light", which changes through the day.

Beneath the dome lies a true museum-city, made of white buildings linked by passages open to the sea. The complex offers about 8,000 m² of galleries, including 23 permanent galleries, in a calm setting where the architecture is part of the visit itself.

The collections: a universal narrative

The Louvre Abu Dhabi presents a permanent collection complemented by loans from French institutions, coordinated by Agence France-Muséums, which brings together seventeen museums including the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Palace of Versailles. The journey sets works from different civilisations and religions side by side, to highlight what connects them.

Visitors discover ancient archaeological pieces as much as masterpieces of painting, religious manuscripts from several traditions and decorative-art objects. Temporary exhibitions, such as the major retrospectives held in recent years, regularly complete the collection.

The Saadiyat Cultural District around the museum

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is no longer alone on Saadiyat Island. The cultural district has grown considerably: teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, a vast immersive-art venue, opened in 2025, followed at the end of the year by the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, designed by Norman Foster. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by Frank Gehry, is due to open in 2026.

This concentration of museums makes Saadiyat one of the world's leading cultural hubs. A visit can be combined with other highlights of the emirate, such as the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, on the neighbouring Yas Island.

Reaching the Louvre Abu Dhabi by private jet
