| Islay (peated whisky) | Islay (ILY) | Short runway, light aircraft |
For these short links, a light to midsize jet is well suited: browse our light jets fleet and our full fleet.
Golf: St Andrews, Gleneagles, Turnberry, Muirfield
Scotland is the home of golf. The Old Course at St Andrews, a public course accessible by daily ballot and closed on Sundays, is reached via Dundee (the nearest airport) or via Edinburgh (EDI), around 90 km, that is 1 hour to 1 hour 15 by road. Gleneagles, in Perthshire, lines up three championship courses, including the PGA Centenary, which hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup and the 2019 Solheim Cup. On the west coast, Turnberry is reached via Prestwick (PIK), around 20 miles away; east of Edinburgh, Muirfield, which has hosted The Open sixteen times, is around 45 minutes away. Finally, Royal Dornoch, the northernmost of the great links, is reached via Inverness (INV), around 1 hour.
Whisky: Speyside and Islay
Two regions dominate whisky. Speyside has the highest concentration of distilleries in Scotland, around fifty, with Glenfiddich at Dufftown and Macallan at Craigellachie; the official Malt Whisky Trail links eight distilleries and one cooperage, that is nine sites. It is reached via Aberdeen (ABZ) in the east, around 1 hour, or via Inverness in the west. The island of Islay, the capital of peated whisky, today has nine working distilleries: Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig in the south, Bowmore in the centre, Bruichladdich in the west, Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain in the north, joined by Kilchoman and Ardnahoe. Its airport (ILY) gives direct access, but its short runway calls for light aircraft.
Which jet, which access for Scotland?
From Paris, allow around 1 hour 45 to 2 hours to Edinburgh, and around 1 hour 15 from London. These times are indicative and vary with aircraft, routing and weather. A light to midsize jet suits most links; Islay calls for light aircraft, and Edinburgh applies night restrictions (23:00-06:00, quiet aircraft on authorisation). The east coast and the Highlands are exposed to wind and coastal mist: it is best to allow for flexibility. See our guide to range by aircraft category.
