The four stages and their runways

The classical circuit follows the life of the Buddha: birth at Lumbini, Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the first sermon at Sarnath, the parinirvana at Kushinagar. Here is what each stage asks of the aircraft.

Bhairahawa only became Nepal's second international airport in May 2022. Kushinagar is more recent still. Before them, part of the circuit had to be done by road, which is why many families still picture a ten-day expedition.

Gaya decides the aircraft

The rule is straightforward: the shortest runway on the itinerary sets the category, not the longest. At around 2,286 m, Gaya sits well below the other three, and the airport is only fourteen kilometres from the Mahabodhi temple, which makes it a stop few groups willingly trade for Varanasi and three hours of driving.

A midsize jet covers the whole circuit without difficulty. Above that category, feasibility at Gaya depends on actual takeoff weight, therefore on the number of pilgrims, the fuel uplift and the temperature, which climbs quickly on the Gangetic plain. It is a calculation we run stage by stage, before commitment.

From Bangkok, the first sector takes about three and a half hours to or from Gaya or Varanasi, on an aircraft matched to the group. The domestic legs that follow are then counted in tens of minutes.

The season, and why it is narrow

The pilgrimage runs from November to February. Temperatures on the Gangetic plain make April to June difficult for groups that include elderly travellers, and the summer monsoon complicates ground movement between the sites.

That narrow window concentrates demand. Gaya receives seasonal international flights during precisely those months, and Thai groups are among the most numerous. Accommodation near the temples is booked well ahead, and airport slots follow the same pattern. Both are worth securing before the aircraft.

What a private flight brings to a pilgrimage

This deserves saying plainly: the pilgrimage does not need a private jet, and many families make it another way. What business aviation brings comes down to three concrete things.

The first is time. Three or four days instead of ten puts the pilgrimage within reach of a business owner or a family whose calendar will not release ten days.

The second is accessibility for elders. A circuit built on long road transfers effectively excludes part of the family. Forty-minute domestic flights change that equation, and it is often the deciding reason.

The third is control over the hours of contemplation. Visiting times are set against the quietest part of the day at each site rather than a coach schedule. The group stays together from end to end, which matters to a family travelling across three generations.
