Metz by private jet: a 3,050 m runway 16.5 km from the city

The airport sits between Metz and Nancy and serves both: the AIP places it 33.5 km north-north-east of Nancy. The Grand Est region owns it and a public body, EPMNL, runs it, according to the French airports union (UAF).

At weekends, fire cover must be ordered 72 hours ahead

The AIP in force in September 2026 publishes level 5 rescue and fire-fighting from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 19:00, except on public holidays and the day before. Outside those hours, an extension up to midnight can be requested by phone or email at least 72 hours in advance. Beyond that, no cover is provided.

A commercial flight is planned around this service, at a level suited to the aircraft. A Sunday evening return is therefore requested on the Thursday. For a non-scheduled flight in a class 6 aircraft, the longest category, level 7 is available from 09:00 to midnight with the same 72-hour notice.

Air traffic control keeps different hours: the tower opens at 05:45 on weekdays and Saturdays but only at 09:00 on Sundays, and an extension can be requested from the operator 24 hours ahead. We check both timetables, never just one.

Customs at 24 hours, apron access at 48 hours

The airport is a designated border crossing point, but customs and police attend on request, 24 hours ahead. That applies to a flight from London, and to one from Geneva, since Switzerland sits outside the EU customs union.

The AIP also restricts apron use by general aviation. Access for aircraft and pilots requires permission from the airport 48 hours before the planned time, and parking on the limited apron P must be announced before take-off. We apply the 48-hour lead time to every charter.

Two further details complete the picture. The runway closes when the crosswind exceeds 20 knots on a wet surface or 25 knots on a dry one, and fuel outside scheduled flights comes through an on-call service, on request.

An airport of international routes, with little business aviation

The 2025 figures from the UAF describe an airport facing abroad: of 119,780 passengers, 117,234 flew on international services and only 2,406 on domestic routes. The airport recorded 1,084 commercial movements and 560 non-commercial movements, against 531 in 2024.

The same listing shows no facility set aside for business aviation. The former Metz-Frescaty air base, south-west of the city, now appears in the AIP only as a helipad reserved for state administrations. For Nancy itself, Nancy-Essey (LFSN) publishes a 1,600 m runway, which the operator assesses jet by jet.

Luxembourg-Findel, the other gateway

Findel lies some fifty kilometres north of Metz as the crow flies, and about an hour by road from Metz-Nancy-Lorraine. According to Luxembourg Airport, its Business Aviation Center, the only private jet terminal in the country, is open every day from 06:00 to 22:00, with extensions on request, and handles customs and border control.

Shigeru Ban at Centre Pompidou-Metz, 5 December 2026 to 30 August 2027

Centre Pompidou-Metz is devoting a major exhibition to Shigeru Ban, who designed its building with Jean de Gastines and is curating the show himself, from 5 December 2026 to 30 August 2027. Calder on Stage follows from 10 April to 15 November 2027, according to the museum's programme.

In winter, the city holds its Christmas market every year from late November to late December: the 2025 edition had 130 chalets, from 21 November to 30 December, according to the Inspire Metz agency. The 2026 dates had not been published by mid-September.
