About 11 kilometres from the centre, Hongqiao is Shanghai's historic airport and the one business aviation favours. Its strength fits in a few words: a dedicated terminal, with customs, immigration and health control handled on site. You never cross the scheduled-flight flows, and the run to the Bund or to Pudong district counts in minutes rather than hours.

It is the natural option for business travel, above all when the programme packs several meetings into one day.

Pudong, the international gateway that never closes

Some thirty kilometres east, Pudong is the large intercontinental platform, open 24 hours a day. It is the airport of long-haul arrivals from Europe, the Gulf or the Americas, and the one to choose when your arrival time falls outside ordinary slots.

The distance carries a road-time cost, variable and sometimes considerable at Shanghai rush hours. We build it into the programme when the itinerary is designed, rather than discovering it on the day.

The rule that changes everything: one movement a day

This is the least known and most structuring constraint. At some Chinese platforms, an aircraft that has landed during the day cannot take off again before 10pm. In practice, a mid-morning arrival at Pudong rules out a late-afternoon departure the same day.

The consequences are direct: the same-day return, routine in Europe, is not always workable here. Depending on your programme, the right answer is a night on site, repositioning the aircraft, or choosing a different platform. Shanghai concentrates regional headquarters, finance and the big trade-fair weeks, which drive slot demand far more than tourism does. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions; Chinese New Year and October's golden week saturate everything, authorisations included.
