• Entry is simple. Nationals of the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand stay up to 90 days without a visa; British nationals up to 180. The exact regime depends on nationality and is checked before each flight.
• The territory is a free port. No customs duty and no import VAT, with only four categories of goods taxed: liquor, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil and methyl alcohol.
• Crossing into the mainland is still crossing a border. A flight to Shanghai or Shenzhen falls under Chinese authorisations, with their own lead times.

One feature deserves to be known: the airport and the terminal have set up a direct transfer service between private and commercial flights. A passenger arriving by jet can connect onto a scheduled long-haul without passing back through the public terminal, which opens useful combinations when the long-haul is already booked.

The airport sits about 34 kilometres from Central, the business district, a run that goes quickly outside peak hours.
