The dates, and the window they create

Terms follow a common rhythm on both sides of the Channel, and the returns concentrate as tightly as the departures.

The consequence is mechanical. On the first weekend of September, the business terminals of Geneva and southern England receive, within a few hours, a large share of the international families whose children study in Europe. In mid-December the movement reverses identically.

Half-term breaks are more scattered: Aiglon breaks from 16 October to 1 November, Harrow from 26 to 30 October only. That dispersion makes October considerably easier to arrange than September.

Where the aircraft land

Swiss boarding schools sit between Lake Geneva and the Vaud and Valais Alps. Geneva serves Rolle and the northern shore; it is also IBC Aviation's headquarters since 2012. For Villars, Verbier or Gstaad, Sion cuts the drive substantially: under an hour to Verbier, against two to three hours from Geneva.

On the British side, three platforms carry most of the traffic. Farnborough, with its 2,440 m runway, accepts every business aircraft on the market, up to Boeing and Airbus corporate jets, and connects to London in around thirty minutes by train or a dozen minutes by helicopter to Battersea. Biggin Hill, twenty-two kilometres south-south-east of central London, is almost entirely given over to business aviation. London Oxford, despite the name, sits nearly a hundred kilometres from the centre, but its motorway access suits the Thames Valley schools.

The visa, obtained before the flight

A Thai child at school in the United Kingdom falls under the Child Student visa, open from 4 to 17. The application requires a confirmed place at a school holding a sponsor licence, a confirmation of acceptance for studies, evidence of funds covering a year of tuition and boarding, parental consent and the arrangements made for the child's care outside boarding periods.

A child travelling alone: what to know

There is no single rule in business aviation. Policies vary from operator to operator, so does the minimum age for an unaccompanied minor, and some require a chain-of-custody document naming the person authorised to receive the child on arrival.

Two things do not vary. The documentary requirements are an adult's: a valid passport and any required visa, with no exception for age. And the agreement must be obtained before the aircraft is booked, because an operator that does not accept unaccompanied minors will not change its policy for one flight.

Luggage, routinely underestimated

A school return does not travel like a holiday. Term trunks, sports equipment, a musical instrument, school books: the volume regularly exceeds what a family anticipates. It constrains more than the passenger count does.

On a flight from Bangkok with two children and their belongings, the hold often decides the category before the cabin does. A heavy jet or an ultra long range aircraft then becomes the right choice, not for the number of seats but for what it carries.
