Gulfstream G500: Range, Cabin and Performance
Range that links continents
Gulfstream's official data sheet gives the G500 5,300 nautical miles (9,816 km) at Mach 0.85, and 4,500 nautical miles (8,334 km) at its high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90. The aircraft has actually gained reach since launch: announced at 5,000 nautical miles in 2014, it was raised to 5,200 in October 2017, then to 5,300 in late October 2020, performance demonstrated in service and valid without modification for aircraft already flying. Among the typical city pairs cited by Gulfstream: Los Angeles-London, San Francisco-Tokyo and Istanbul-Cape Town, with real-world performance depending on winds, load and reserves.

A flight deck that made history
The G500 introduced Gulfstream's Symmetry Flight Deck: it is the first certified civil aircraft equipped with electronically linked active control sidesticks, supported by 10 touchscreen displays. This architecture improves crew coordination and situational awareness, to the direct benefit of safety. At its fastest, the aircraft reaches Mach 0.925, placing it among the fastest business jets in service.
A cabin designed for long sectors
The cabin measures 12.65 metres long (excluding the baggage compartment), 2.31 metres wide and 1.88 metres high, for a volume of 48.56 m3. It can be configured with up to 3 living areas, seats up to 19 passengers and offers up to 8 berths in night configuration. Its 14 panoramic oval windows flood the space with natural light, the air is 100% fresh, never recirculated, and the cabin altitude sits at 992 metres when cruising at 41,000 feet: all elements that reduce fatigue on long sectors.
Engines and ceiling
The G500 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW814GA engines of 15,144 lb of thrust each (67.36 kN). It cruises at up to 51,000 feet (15,545 metres), above commercial traffic and most weather.
From first flight to London City: the key dates
Announced on 14 October 2014 alongside its larger sibling the G600, the G500 first flew on 18 May 2015. It received its FAA type and production certificates on 20 July 2018 and entered service on 27 September 2018; the European (EASA) type certification followed on 11 October 2019. In the meantime, the aircraft had made its European debut in May 2017, at Paris-Le Bourget and then at EBACE in Geneva, after a Savannah-Paris flight completed in 7 h 40 at an average of Mach 0.90; before its first delivery, it had set more than 20 city-pair speed records during a world tour.
The latest milestone, and the most useful for European travellers: in January 2026, the G500 (with the G600) earned EASA steep-approach certification, demonstrated at London City and Lugano. It broadens access to constrained city airports, depending on the aircraft's configuration and the operator's approval. The G500/G600 family then counted more than 350 aircraft in service and over 350,000 flight hours.
The G500 in the Gulfstream range
As of July 2026, the G500 features in the Gulfstream catalogue within a range that includes the G300 (unveiled in September 2025), the G400 (in flight testing), the G600, the G800 (certified in April 2025) and the G700. It holds the heart of the long-range segment, below the very long reach of the G800 and the emblematic G650, whose fleet page you can also consult.
