Gulfstream G400: The Range's Newest Addition
A programme still in flight testing
Unveiled on 4 October 2021 at the Savannah headquarters, alongside the G800, the G400 first flew on 15 August 2024, a 2-hour-54-minute flight at Mach 0.85 and 41,000 feet, operated on a sustainable aviation fuel blend. As of June 2026, three aircraft are taking part in the test campaign.
Let us be precise about the schedule, because many sources gloss over it: the 2025 entry into service targeted at unveiling was not met, and Gulfstream has communicated no replacement timeline. As of mid-2026, neither US type certification, nor European certification, nor a first delivery date is public. The manufacturer anticipated as early as 2022 a longer campaign than those of the G500 and G600, owing to the new engine variant and tightened certification requirements.
Announced range and performance
All the figures below are preliminary: Gulfstream publishes them subject to change for as long as the aircraft is not certified.
| Characteristic (preliminary data) | Gulfstream G400 |
| Announced range (Mach 0.85) | 4,200 nm (7,778 km) |
| Range at Mach 0.88 | 3,950 nm (7,315 km) |
| Announced maximum speed | Mach 0.90 |
| Passengers | 9, 11 or 12 depending on layout |
| Cabin (L x W x H) | 11.07 m x 2.31 m x 1.88 m |
| Engines | 2 Pratt & Whitney PW812GA |
| Announced ceiling | 51,000 ft (15,545 m) |
| Status as of mid-2026 | in flight testing, not certified |
The 4,200 nautical mile range is announced at Mach 0.85 with 8 passengers, 3 crew and regulatory reserves. Among the non-stop city pairs cited by Gulfstream to position the aircraft: Munich to or from Mumbai, Zurich to or from New York and Geneva to or from Dubai, on the basis of this as-yet uncertified performance.
A cabin derived from the G500 and G600
The G400 takes over the fuselage cross-section and the winglet-equipped clean wing of the G500 and G600. Its cabin measures 11.07 metres long (excluding the baggage compartment), 2.31 metres wide and 1.88 metres high, which is exactly the same width and height as its larger siblings. The difference lies in length, and therefore in the number of windows: 10 panoramic oval windows, against 14 on the G500 and G600.
Three layouts are offered, seating 9, 11 or 12, with up to two and a half living areas and berthing for five. The air is 100% fresh, never recirculated, purified by an ionisation system.
Flight deck and engines
The G400 receives the Symmetry Flight Deck, first introduced on the G500, complemented by a predictive landing performance system. For power, two Pratt & Whitney PW812GA engines of around 13,500 lb of thrust each, a variant certified by the Canadian authorities in September 2022 after more than 3,400 hours of testing. The G400 is expected to fall under the same type rating as the G500 and G600, which would simplify crew transition, but that extension is not yet secured.
European debut and a first claimed record
The G400 was presented in Europe on 8 June 2026, at Gulfstream's facility at Farnborough Airport, during a private customer event. This is worth spelling out, as the confusion is common: it was not the Farnborough air show. The aircraft on display was one of the three engaged in the test programme, not an aircraft delivered to a customer.
To reach the United Kingdom, the aircraft flew Washington to Farnborough in 6 hours and 12 minutes, over 3,250 nautical miles at an average of Mach 0.87, on a 70% sustainable fuel blend: a first city-pair speed record claimed by Gulfstream, whose homologation is not confirmed. Worth noting for European charter: as early as September 2024, Germany's DC Aviation Group ordered the first G400 destined for dedicated charter in Europe.
The G400 in the Gulfstream range
A useful clarification: the G400 does not replace the G280. It is the G300, unveiled on 30 September 2025 and powered by Honeywell engines, that succeeds it in the super-midsize segment; it made its own first flight on 5 December 2025. Two Gulfstream aircraft are therefore currently in certification. The G400 slots in below the G500 and the G600, while the top of the range is held by the G700 and the G800, certified in April 2025, alongside the emblematic G650.

What is the announced range of the G400?
4,200 nautical miles, or 7,778 km, at Mach 0.85 with 8 passengers and regulatory reserves, and 3,950 nautical miles at Mach 0.88. These figures are preliminary and published subject to change.
How many passengers can the G400 carry?
Three layouts are offered, seating 9, 11 or 12, with up to two and a half living areas and berthing for five.
What is the difference between the G400 and the G500?
