1,270 km south-west, from the plateau down to the coast

Measured between the reference points published in the AIP, the great-circle distance is 1,265 km from Lanseria and 1,272 km from OR Tambo. Allow 1h55 to 2h15 in the air depending on the aircraft and the wind, in line with the 2 hours shown on our airport pages for both cities.

On the way, the aircraft leaves an airfield more than 1,300 m up for a runway 46 m above sea level. That drop in elevation shapes the planning more than the distance does.

Lanseria or OR Tambo, 22 nautical miles apart

The AIP published by the SACAA places Lanseria 22 nautical miles, roughly forty kilometres, north-west of OR Tambo. Both are official ports of entry, yet they work differently.

• Lanseria (HLA / FALA): run by a private company, Lanseria (Pty) Ltd, with a single 2,996 m runway. The airport, customs, immigration and refuelling all operate around the clock. There are no international transit facilities, so a traveller arriving from abroad clears immigration before flying on to Cape Town.
• OR Tambo (JNB / FAOR): operated by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), 10 nautical miles east-north-east of central Johannesburg, with runways of 4,421 m and 3,405 m. Every flight uses the apron and terminal allocated by apron control, and no aircraft may operate directly to or from a hangar without the airport's agreement.

At 1,694 m, the take-off has to be worked out

OR Tambo sits at 1,694 m and Lanseria at 1,378 m. The air is thinner, and the US Federal Aviation Administration explains that thinner air lengthens the take-off distance and cuts the rate of climb. Heat makes it worse.

The southbound leg is therefore the one that needs the most margin. For every departure, the operator calculates the permissible take-off weight, passengers, bags and fuel included. When performance is tight, the FAA advises flying in the cool of the day, early morning or late afternoon; in the southern summer, our teams factor that in when they propose a departure time.

Cape Town (CPT / FACT): 13 km from the city, a 3,201 m runway

Cape Town International lies 7 nautical miles, about 13 km, south-east of the city. Its main runway, 01/19, measures 3,201 m by 61 m, backed by a second runway of 1,701 m. The AIP names two business aviation providers, Signature and ExecuJet, both offering refuelling 24 hours a day on request.

A non-scheduled flight that wants the main apron must tell the ACSA apron office at least 24 hours ahead. The message states arrival and departure times, the long-term parking chosen, main apron or general aviation area, and the names of the operator and its ground handler. International and regional flights have no choice: they park on the main apron to clear immigration. Our Cape Town airport page covers the city and the winelands.

Same-day return: 4 hours at Lanseria, 14 hours at OR Tambo

If the aircraft waits for you, each airport sets its own limit. At Lanseria, it may not stay more than 4 hours on aprons A, B or C without prior approval from the apron office. At OR Tambo, an unscheduled flight requests its parking stand 24 hours ahead, otherwise nothing is guaranteed, and an aircraft on stand for more than 14 hours must move to another stand, a hangar or another location. In Cape Town, the 24-hour notice already states where the aircraft will spend the day.

A domestic flight, so a South African operator

Carrying passengers for reward between two South African cities falls under the Air Services Licensing Act of 1990, which the AIP describes as the law governing domestic air services. In February 2025, the Department of Transport restated that a licence holder must have 75% of its voting rights held by South African citizens resident in the country. We therefore charter Johannesburg to Cape Town through South African operators.

A foreign aircraft gets only a narrow allowance. The AIP exempts a charter flight carrying no more than 8 passengers from the foreign operator's permit on two conditions: it takes on no passenger in South Africa for another point in the country, other than those on its international flight, and it holds a landing clearance from the Department of Transport. Which private jet for Johannesburg to Cape Town

Johannesburg to Cape Town is quoted by the flight hour, with no set fare. Only the category hourly rates serve as a guide. A real quote depends on where the aircraft is based, any positioning flight and the pattern chosen: one way, crew waiting in Cape Town, or a return without passengers. An aircraft heading back to base after dropping its passengers is sometimes offered at a reduced price. These empty legs are confirmed late and suit flexible dates.

Flying in from London or Dubai before Cape Town

Lanseria, OR Tambo and Cape Town all appear on the AIP's list of ports of entry, and the Department of Home Affairs shows all three as open 24 hours. An international flight can therefore land straight in Cape Town, without stopping in Johannesburg.

On 12 August 2026, the department officially launched the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Applied for online, it arrives within 24 hours when approved, initially for arrivals at OR Tambo, Lanseria, Cape Town and Durban. It will progressively become compulsory for nationalities that need a visa and will be open, on a voluntary basis, to visa-exempt travellers. British, Emirati and French passports are visa-exempt for 90 days, according to the list issued on 9 December 2025.

Since 1 July 2026, every traveller also completes an online customs declaration within the 24 hours before the last flight into South Africa departs. The UK Foreign Office also reminds travellers that a South African citizen aged 18 or over enters and leaves the country on a South African passport.
