Méribel by private jet: a 406 m altiport closed to charter aeroplanes

The Méribel Robert Merloz altiport carries the ICAO code LFKX. Its visual landing chart, reissued by the French aeronautical information service on 19 February 2026, places it 1.5 km north-north-east of Méribel Les Allues and classes it for restricted use.

387 m to land, and only mountain-rated pilots

The usable length is shorter than the runway itself. Obstacles in the strip cut the declared landing distance to 387 m, uphill towards the south-south-east, while take-offs run the other way, downhill. The altiport is reserved for pilots holding a mountain rating or a valid access authorisation.

The remaining rules protect the valley's peace. No take-off before 09:00 local time without the operator's permission, and no more than two landings per half-day for a visiting aeroplane. In winter, the runway is not ploughed.

Even a six-seat turboprop therefore cannot drop paying passengers there. Jets land in the lowlands, and neighbouring Courchevel works under different rules, described on our Courchevel by private jet page.

Helicopters are welcome, on a cramped apron

The ban covers aeroplanes only. The AIP chart provides for helicopter use of the altiport: they fly the aeroplane circuit at 6,500 ft and park north of the tower, or south with the operator's approval. It describes the apron as cramped and asks crews to limit rotors-running boarding.

A helicopter transfer from Chambéry or Geneva can therefore end above Méribel Centre, subject to weather, apron space and timing, since the 09:00 rule applies to every take-off. Bulky luggage often goes up by road, as our Geneva to Courchevel by helicopter article explains.

Chambéry, Grenoble or Geneva: 55 minutes, 1 h 10 or 2 hours to Moûtiers

Les 3 Vallées publishes driving times to Moûtiers, the gateway to the valley, in normal conditions. One figure matters more than the others: Grenoble costs only a quarter of an hour more than Chambéry.

• Grenoble Alpes Isère (GNB): about 1 h 10 for 107 km, with a 3,050 m runway according to the AIP.

From 1 November to 31 March, France's mountain law requires winter tyres or chains on board, the tourist office reminds visitors, so we book equipped vehicles large enough for ski bags.

Season 2026-2027: 5 December to 18 April

For winter 2026-2027, the Méribel ski area runs from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, on the same dates as the 3 Vallées links; Val Thorens and Orelle operate from 21 November to 2 May. The resort climbs through five quarters, from Méribel Les Allues at 1,100 m to Méribel Mottaret at 1,750 m, at the centre of a 600 km linked ski area.

Méribel hosted the Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in 2022, then the World Championships in 2023 alongside Courchevel. On the racing calendar, the women's World Cup returns to Courchevel on 22 December 2026 for a night slalom, in the middle of Christmas week.

The tourist office lists three five-star hotels in Méribel: Le Kaïla, Le Coucou and L'Hélios & Spa by Carita. Catered chalets complete the offer for larger groups.

Which private jet for Méribel

The choice follows the airport, not the resort. Into Chambéry, a 7-seat Phenom 300 covers a flight from Paris or Brussels at the light-jet hourly rate, from €4,000. A party of eight from London is better served by a Citation XLS, a midsize from €4,800 an hour.

Geneva is the only one of these gateways with a starting price: London to Geneva from €12,000 in a Citation XLS, 8 seats, 1 h 30, and Dubai to Geneva from €76,000 in a Falcon 2000, 10 seats, 6 h 35, road transfer excluded. No amount is published for Chambéry or Grenoble.

Can a private jet land at Méribel altiport?

No. The LFKX runway measures 406 m by 15, with 387 m declared for landing and a 5-tonne strength limit. The AIP bans commercial air transport by aeroplane there, except introductory flights, and reserves it for mountain-rated pilots. Jets land at Chambéry, Grenoble or Geneva instead.

Which airport is best for Méribel?

According to the official 3 Vallées website, allow about 55 minutes by road from Chambéry, 1 h 10 from Grenoble and 2 hours from Geneva to Moûtiers, in normal conditions. Méribel is then 18 km from Moûtiers station. The arrival day and the aircraft decide between Chambéry and Grenoble.

Can the last leg to Méribel be flown by helicopter?

Yes, under conditions. The AIP allows helicopters at the altiport, parking north of the tower on an apron it describes as cramped. No take-off is allowed before 09:00 without the operator's permission, and mountain weather decides whether the flight goes. Bulky luggage often travels up by road.

When does the Méribel ski area open for winter 2026-2027?

From 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, according to Les 3 Vallées, on the same dates as the links between the valleys. Val Thorens and Orelle open earlier and close later, from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. A women's World Cup night slalom takes place in Courchevel on 22 December.
