No airline lands at Mandelieu

There is no scheduled service into Cannes. A French ministerial order of 6 December 1995, as amended and reproduced in the AIP, bars scheduled commercial transport from Cannes-Mandelieu, so airline passengers land at Nice and then face 30 to 40 minutes by road, traffic permitting.

A private jet puts you down 5.9 km (4 miles) west of Cannes. At Le Bourget, a jet may leave its stand for take-off from 06:00: leave at around 06:30 and you are on the Croisette before 09:00. For travellers arriving in Paris from New York or Dubai, that makes Cannes a short onward hop rather than a second airline trip. Departure and arrival airports

The two airfields are about 695 km apart in a straight line.

• Paris-Le Bourget (LBG / LFPB): 12 km (7 miles) north-north-east of Paris, with air traffic control and customs 24 hours a day. Handling by an approved company based on the airport is mandatory, and its name goes into the flight plan: we book it together with the aircraft. • Cannes-Mandelieu (CEQ / LFMD): a main runway of 1,540 m, jets capped at 35 tonnes maximum take-off weight, and a Category B classification that requires the captain to be trained on the airfield's procedures. • Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE / LFMN): open day and night, with a COHOR slot required for every movement all year. It is our fallback in the evening, in poor weather, or for aircraft above 35 tonnes.

Sea mist and the evening closure: why Nice is always in the plan

The Cannes-Mandelieu AIP publishes its control hours in UTC. Converted, they give an 08:00 opening and a closing time of 20:00, 21:00 or 22:00 Cannes time, set by NOTAM, so for a late departure from Paris it is that closing time, not the flight time, that decides the last take-off from Le Bourget.

Mist is the other risk. The same document warns that sea mist can cover the airfield within minutes, and states that limited capacity exposes instrument flights to significant delays, mainly on arrival, because arrivals and departures conflict on the same runway.

Two rules follow from this. Every flight to Cannes carries Nice as its alternate, with a car ready if the mist closes Mandelieu. In the evening, we keep a margin on the closing time rather than aim for the last minute.
