Val d'Isère by private jet, two hours by road from Chambéry

The French AIP lists no aeroplane airfield at Val d'Isère or Tignes, only three heliports. The question is therefore never where to land in the valley, but which lowland airport to use, and how much road time it costs.

No altiport, but three published heliports

The AIP lists three helicopter landing sites across the two resorts. The one at La Daille, at 5,910 ft, or about 1,800 m, comes under the Régie des pistes de Val d'Isère and accepts on-demand public transport on a paved pad. The Tête de Solaise site, at 8,366 ft, sits on packed snow and is used in winter only.

In Tignes, the Les Boisses heliport, at 5,961 ft, is reserved for pilots authorised by its operator, with a request 24 hours ahead. In winter, the road comes in through Bourg-Saint-Maurice

The Col de l'Iseran road is closed in winter. It reopens in June, depending on snow clearance, and closes again between October and November. During the ski season, cars therefore come up the Tarentaise valley through Bourg-Saint-Maurice, 30 km and 40 minutes from the village.

The tourist office puts figures on the rest of the drive: 135 km and 2 hours from Chambéry, 165 km and 2 h 30 from Grenoble, 220 km and 3 hours from Geneva, 240 km and 3 hours from Lyon. It also warns that holiday Saturdays clog the road and suggests Sunday-to-Sunday stays, advice that counts twice for a client arriving by jet.

Chambéry or Geneva: what tips the balance

Chambéry saves an hour in the car. In return, the airport caps arrivals on winter weekends and overnight parking from Friday to Sunday, and its mountain procedures require a crew trained for the airfield. For a family in a light jet arriving midweek, it is the shortest way in.

Geneva adds an hour of driving and a border crossing, but its 3,900 m runway rules out no business aircraft, long-haul jets from the Gulf or the United States included. Grenoble, 2 h 30 by road, and Lyon, 3 hours, complete the options when the first two are full.

Tignes-Val d'Isère, 300 km of pistes between 1,550 and 3,400 m

Long known as the Espace Killy, the linked Tignes and Val d'Isère ski area has 300 km of marked pistes, 161 runs and 71 lifts, skiable from 1,550 m to over 3,400 m according to the resort. For winter 2026-2027, the lifts run from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027.

The Face de Bellevarde hosted events of the 1992 Albertville Olympics and the 2009 World Ski Championships, and Val d'Isère is where Jean-Claude Killy, triple Olympic gold medallist in 1968, learned to ski.

The Critérium de la Première Neige, 12 and 13 December 2026

The 71st Critérium, a stop on the alpine skiing World Cup, schedules a men's giant slalom on Saturday 12 December 2026 and a men's slalom on Sunday 13, both on the Face de Bellevarde. The organiser's race programme, published in French, states that run times may change.

That Saturday is also the first of the season on which Chambéry caps arrivals. For an arrival that day, we file the Chambéry request as soon as the aircraft is booked and keep Geneva in reserve; Friday 11 December is not among the capped days published by COHOR.

Which private jet for Val d'Isère

The aircraft follows from the airport. To Chambéry, a 7-seat Phenom 300 covers a flight from Paris or Brussels in about an hour, at the light jet hourly rate, from €4,000. Eight skiers flying in from London are better placed in a Citation XLS, a midsize charged from €4,800 an hour, for an hour and a half in the air.
