New York to the Alps by Private Jet: Geneva, Chambéry, Sion
Teterboro to Geneva in about seven hours
Geneva Airport (GVA) lies 6,208 km from Teterboro on the great circle, which means about seven hours eastbound in a heavy or ultra-long-range jet, depending on the winds. Chambéry (CMF), 1 h 30 by road from Courchevel, and Sion (SIR), 45 to 50 minutes from Verbier, sit closer to the snow but ask more of the crew and of the schedule.
What decides a winter trip is the calendar: Geneva opens its business aviation bookings only five days before the flight, and Chambéry rations its Saturday arrivals all season. Our Geneva office secures the aircraft and the handling weeks ahead, then files each request the moment it opens. Request a quote for your ski week in the Alps, with an answer within the hour.
Flight times to the Alps from five North American airports
Chambéry is only 13 km further from Teterboro than Geneva, and Sion 85 km, so one table serves the three airports. The times below are eastbound, with the prevailing westerlies behind you; they are estimates to confirm with the operator for the aircraft and the day.
| Departure | Distance to Geneva | Non-stop with | Eastbound, in the order of |
| New York, Teterboro (TEB) | 6,208 km | heavy or ultra-long-range jet | 7 h |
| Boston, Hanscom (BED) | 5,916 km | heavy or ultra-long-range jet | 6 h 30 to 7 h |
| Montreal, Saint-Hubert (YHU) | 5,881 km | heavy or ultra-long-range jet | 6 h 30 to 7 h |
| Palm Beach (PBI) | 7,626 km | longest-range heavy jets, ultra-long-range | 8 h 30 |
| Los Angeles, Van Nuys (VNY) | 9,489 km | ultra-long-range jet only | 10 h 30 to 11 h |
Flying home takes longer. Against the same winds, our reference for the westbound crossing is Paris to New York in 7 h 25 in a Falcon 7X, for a sector 375 km shorter than Geneva to Teterboro.
No fixed fare is published for New York to Geneva. A heavy jet starts at €6,500 per flight hour, an ultra-long-range jet at €9,000 to €12,000. For scale, a one-way Paris to New York starts at €115,000 in a Falcon 7X, 14 seats. A transatlantic ski quote prices both crossings together, with the positioning legs if the aircraft is not based in New York and the crew's days in Geneva if it waits for you; the brackets for each category are set out in our private jet charter prices.
The flight home decides the aircraft
Eastbound, a heavy jet covers New York to Geneva with room to spare. Our fleet page gives the Falcon 900LX a range of 8,800 km with six passengers. The return in January or February is a different calculation: a full cabin, skis and boots in the hold, and the jet stream on the nose for eight hours. For that leg the operator works out whether a technical stop on the North Atlantic is needed, and we settle it before you sign rather than in Geneva on the morning of departure.
When the margin is thin, the straight answer is an ultra-long-range jet for both crossings. The Falcon 7X is listed at 11,000 km, the Global 7500 at 14,260 km, and the Gulfstream G650 belongs to the same category. From Los Angeles, 9,489 km from Geneva, only this category flies non-stop in either direction.
Geneva takes the largest of them without discussion; at Chambéry and Sion the operator calculates weights for a wet or snow-covered runway, and Geneva followed by a helicopter is often the cleaner plan.
The Port Authority bars any aircraft with an actual gross weight above 100,000 lb, about 45,360 kg, from landing, taking off or taxiing there. A jet certified above that figure leaves Teterboro only if its operator certifies an operating weight of 100,000 lb or less, with weight-and-balance sheets sent at least 72 hours ahead, or obtains prior permission from the airport manager. With transatlantic fuel on board, we have the operator settle that calculation before confirming the departure airport.
Geneva, Chambéry or Sion: start from the chalet
The right airport is the one nearest to where you sleep, provided your aircraft can use it in winter. Three gateways cover the main resorts.
- Geneva (GVA / LSGG): every business jet, two FBOs and customs in the business aviation terminal, detailed on our Geneva Airport page. Chamonix is about 1 h 15 by road. Courchevel is 2 h 30 to 3 h by car in season, or about 30 minutes by helicopter, a transfer we arrange from the apron (Geneva to Courchevel by helicopter).
- Chambéry (CMF / LFLB): the Tarentaise gateway. By road, Moûtiers is 1 h 00 for Méribel and the Courchevel valley, Bourg-Saint-Maurice 1 h 20 for Val d'Isère, Tignes and Les Arcs, Courchevel 1 h 30 and La Plagne 1 h 35, according to the French airports union. The runway is 2,020 m; Saturday slots and parking stands are covered, with crew training, on our Chambéry private jet page.
- Sion (SIR / LSGS): the Valais side, on a 2,000 m runway. Verbier is 45 to 50 minutes by road or a short helicopter hop to Le Châble; Crans-Montana is also reached from the Valais floor. For Zermatt, cars stop at Täsch and a 12-minute shuttle train finishes the journey, unless a helicopter takes you in 10 to 20 minutes.
Neither Courchevel nor Megève takes a transatlantic jet. The Courchevel altiport, 536 m long with a slope reaching 18.66%, is reserved for propeller aircraft of 5.7 tonnes or less and for helicopters, and it does not accept flights from outside the Schengen area. Whatever the resort, an arrival from the United States clears the border first at one of these three airports.
Organising your ski flight with IBC Aviation
A transatlantic ski week, with flights to or from the Alps on both ends, runs on four or five permissions that must line up with the aircraft. From our Geneva office, headquarters of IBC Aviation since 2012, we take them in the order they close.
- The Geneva prior permission, booked through the handling agent as soon as bookings open, five days before each movement, for the arrival and for the return.
- The Saturday authorisation at Chambéry, with a stand for the week or a plan to send the aircraft home and bring it back.
- Customs notice: Chambéry wants 24 hours' notice for customs, and Sion an immigration form with crew and passenger details before arrival; we send both.
- The last kilometres: car or helicopter to the chalet, timed on the landing, and a check of the hold against the length of your ski bags.
Six hours separate New York from Geneva in winter, so an evening request from Manhattan reaches us at dawn and is worked on before your morning. Send us your dates, the resort and the size of your party: you receive one proposal covering both crossings and the transfers.
First landing in Europe: passports and EES checks
From the United States, your first Alpine airport is also the external border of the Schengen area, whether it is in Switzerland or in France; our guide to coming to France by private jet covers the wider arrival. Passports are checked there, and the Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a facial image at a first entry; the system has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, at Swiss airports as in France. ETIAS, the travel authorisation, is not in operation yet, and the European Union says it will announce the start date several months ahead. Our article on EES and ETIAS for private jet travellers follows the timetable.
At Geneva, a passenger on a direct flight from the United States clears Swiss border control in the business aviation terminal, even with a chalet in Chamonix or Megève: the airport's French sector serves flights to and from France, not international arrivals. At Sion, customs and immigration follow the airport's winter hours, 08:00 local time until nightfall and 20:00 at the latest.
One point concerns travellers who cross in their own N-registered aircraft: a later commercial leg inside the European Union, Chambéry to Paris for example, falls under the EU cabotage rules. We then charter that leg from a European operator.
Christmas, MLK weekend, Presidents' Day: when the Alps fill up
American school holidays and European ones overlap on a handful of weekends, and those are the weekends when slots and stands run out first.
- Christmas and New Year: the busiest fortnight of the season, and the Chambéry Saturday caps are already in force from 12 December.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday 18 January 2027: a long weekend that suits a short trip to Geneva or Sion.
- Presidents' Day, Monday 15 February 2027: the long weekend falls in Geneva's February school holiday (15 to 19 February 2027) and opens the French zone A holidays, which cover the Grenoble academy, Savoie and Haute-Savoie included, and Lyon (13 February to 1 March). For a Saturday 13 February arrival, Geneva takes the booking from Monday 8 February, by which time the aircraft and crew should have been confirmed for weeks.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a private jet flight from New York to Geneva?
About seven hours eastbound from Teterboro, 6,208 km on the great circle, depending on the aircraft and the winds. The return takes longer against the westerlies: as a reference, Paris to New York is 7 h 25 in a Falcon 7X.
How much does a private jet from New York to the Alps cost?
There is no fixed fare for New York to Geneva. A heavy jet starts at €6,500 per flight hour and an ultra-long-range jet at €9,000 to €12,000. For scale, a one-way Paris to New York starts at €115,000 in a Falcon 7X, 14 seats.
Can a private jet from the United States land in Courchevel?
No. The Courchevel altiport, 536 m long with a slope reaching 18.66%, takes only propeller aircraft of 5.7 tonnes or less and helicopters, and refuses flights from outside the Schengen area. A flight from the United States lands at Geneva or Chambéry; the last leg is about 30 minutes by helicopter from Geneva, or 1 h 30 by road from Chambéry.
Which airport is closest to Verbier and Zermatt?
Sion, on a 2,000 m runway in the Valais: Verbier is 45 to 50 minutes by road, Zermatt 10 to 20 minutes by helicopter, or via Täsch and a 12-minute train. The crew needs a local qualification for Sion.
When should I book a private jet for Presidents' Day in the Alps?
We recommend confirming the aircraft before Christmas. That week overlaps the Geneva school holiday and the start of the French zone A holidays. Geneva only opens business aviation bookings five days before the flight, from Monday 8 February for a Saturday 13 February arrival, and Chambéry caps Saturday arrivals from 12 December to 3 April.
