Thailand Private Jet Airports: Runways, Hours, Access

The three platforms that take everything

U-Tapao (UTP / VTBU), south-east of Bangkok and the gateway to Pattaya, offers 3,505 m by 60. It is the most generous runway in the country outside the capital, shared with the Royal Thai Navy. Phuket (HKT / VTSP) and Krabi (KBV / VTSG) each offer in the order of 3,000 m.

On these three, the category question does not arise: an ultra long range jet arriving from Geneva or Los Angeles operates at full load. Krabi has one advantage Phuket lacks at the height of the season, direct ramp access, which noticeably shortens the time between the aircraft door and the car.

2,100 metres: what the runway actually allows

Three airports share exactly the same length, and it is the threshold that comes up most often in our Thai files. Koh Samui (USM / VTSM), Sukhothai (THS / VTPO) and Hua Hin (HHQ / VTPH) each have 2,100 m. The first two are paved 45 m wide, Hua Hin 35 m, with a widening announced.

That threshold comfortably admits a light jet and a midsize, whose published takeoff distances sit well below it. The discussion starts above. A heavier aircraft is not ruled out in principle, but its feasibility depends on actual takeoff weight, therefore on passenger count, fuel uplift, temperature and the following sector. It is a per-flight calculation, never a general rule, and it happens before commitment rather than after.

Airport Runway Elevation Local opening Status
U-Tapao (UTP / VTBU) 3,505 x 60 m low continuous public and military
Phuket (HKT / VTSP) about 3,000 m low continuous public, AOT
Krabi (KBV / VTSG) about 3,000 m low continuous public
Koh Samui (USM / VTSM) 2,100 x 45 m 19.5 m 06h00 to 22h00 public, operated by the Bangkok Airways group
Sukhothai (THS / VTPO) 2,100 x 45 m 56 m 06h00 to 20h00 private, Bangkok Airways
Hua Hin (HHQ / VTPH) 2,100 x 35 m 12 m daylight public
Trat (VTBO) 1,800 x 45 m 33 m 06h00 to 22h00 private, Bangkok Airways

The Koh Samui, Sukhothai and Trat figures come from the Thai civil aviation authority's aeronautical information publication, the CAAT, cycle of 19 March 2026. The other three lengths are given as orders of magnitude, to be reconfirmed at quotation.

Opening hours, a more frequent constraint than runway length

Two closing times deserve a place in your planning. Koh Samui closes at 22h00 local and Sukhothai at 20h00. A delay on the preceding sector, a missed slot in Bangkok, and the arrival slides to the following morning.

At Trat, air traffic services run on a narrower band than the aerodrome itself, with the possibility of an out-of-hours opening on three hours' notice according to the AIP. That flexibility exists, it is requested, it is not assumed. On short domestic sectors, our Bangkok teams set the departure time against the closing time at the far end, never the reverse.

The two private airports, and what that implies

Sukhothai and Trat belong to Bangkok Airways, which built them and operates them. That status does not close them to business aviation, and the Trat runway, concrete and asphalt, takes a light jet without difficulty. But access there requires in practice the operator's prior agreement, a step handled upstream that has no equivalent on a public platform.

It is a nuance the online comparison sites leave out, and it explains why a quick answer on Trat or Sukhothai is worth more than an optimistic one. Koh Samui sits in between: built by the same group, it is listed in the AIP as a public aerodrome.

The islands with no runway at all

Some of the most requested addresses are served by no airport. Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Yao Noi, the Phi Phi islands and Koh Lanta are worked from Samui, Phuket or Krabi, then by boat, helicopter or seaplane. Our partnership with Siam Seaplane covers that final stage, landing on the water as close to the shore as possible, eight passengers at most and daylight only. The approved sites are first in the Andaman Sea.

The full reasoning, coast by coast and season by season, is in our guide to private jet travel in Thailand.

What our teams check before every quote

Four points, in this order:

  • The arrival runway against the actual takeoff weight of the aircraft selected
  • The closing time, compared with the planned arrival time and its margin
  • The airport's status, and the clearance to request where it is private
  • The continuity of the journey, where the target island has no runway and a second aircraft or a boat takes over

These checks are run from our Bangkok office, on the operators' own time zone. They cost the client nothing and they avoid the least pleasant answer in this business, the one that arrives after confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Koh Samui airport close?

At 22h00 local time, having opened at 06h00, according to the Thai aeronautical information publication. Sukhothai closes earlier still, at 20h00. On a domestic sector, the departure time is therefore set against the closing time at the arrival end.

Can a heavy jet land on a 2,100 metre runway?

It is not ruled out in principle, but it is not decided on length alone. Actual takeoff weight, therefore passenger count, fuel uplift, temperature and the following sector, determine feasibility. The calculation is run flight by flight, before commitment.

Can a private jet land at Trat or Sukhothai?

Both airports belong to Bangkok Airways, which operates them. The Trat runway, 1,800 m of concrete and asphalt, takes a light jet without difficulty. Access requires in practice the operator's prior agreement, obtained ahead of the flight.

Which airport serves Koh Chang and Koh Kood?

Trat (VTBO), some thirty kilometres north-west of Trat town, then a sea crossing. It is the only airport in the province, and both its private status and its 1,800 m runway shape the choice of aircraft.

What runway length does a private jet need?

A light jet and a midsize operate comfortably on 2,100 m, with published takeoff distances well below that. Above those categories, length becomes one parameter among several, alongside weight, temperature and aerodrome elevation.
