What the runway allows

The Thai civil aviation authority's aeronautical information publication, the CAAT, gives the exact figures: runway 17/35, 2,100 m by 45, asphalt surface, aerodrome at 19.5 m elevation. The AIP lists it as a public aerodrome, operated by a company in the Bangkok Airways group.

A light jet and a midsize operate there without reservation, their published takeoff distances sitting well below that threshold. Above it, the conversation changes in nature.

A heavier aircraft is not ruled out in principle, but feasibility is calculated case by case: passenger count, fuel needed for the following sector, temperature at the moment of departure. The 22h00 closing time, an underestimated constraint

The runway draws attention, the opening hours much less. Samui opens at 06h00 and closes at 22h00 local time. On a one-hour sector from Bangkok that leaves margin, but the margin is spent quickly.

A missed slot in Bangkok, a delay on the long-haul sector before it, and the arrival slides to the following morning. Our teams therefore set the departure time against the closing time at the arrival end, with a reserve, rather than against the preferred departure hour.

A season that runs opposite to the Andaman coast

This is the argument our clients most often discover mid-conversation. When the south-west monsoon soaks Phuket and Krabi from May to October, the Gulf of Thailand stays dry. Samui then becomes the answer for a beach stay in the middle of the European summer.

The Gulf has its own wet season, later in the year, generally concentrated towards its end. The exact dates shift from year to year and are worth reconfirming when scheduling, rather than read off a climate average.

The island, and its neighbours with no runway

Samui is some twenty kilometres across, which makes transfers short and predictable. The major addresses sit around its perimeter: the Four Seasons on the heights of the north-west, the Conrad in villas carved into the hillside at the south-west tip.

Kamalaya, in the south, is a case of its own. This wellness sanctuary is built around an ancient monk's meditation cave, on a private beach, roughly 25 km from the airport, about forty minutes by road. It is one of the addresses that on its own justifies a trip to the Gulf.

Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, its immediate neighbours, have no runway at all. You arrive through Samui, then continue by boat or helicopter. When Samui is not the right answer

There are cases where we recommend something else, and it is better said before the quote. A large group travelling with bulky equipment, an arrival that must happen after 22h00, or a direct sector from Europe with no break: these three configurations run into the airport's characteristics.

The alternatives exist and change the nature of the trip. Krabi and Phuket have 3,000 m of runway and run 24 hours a day, but sit on the other coast, therefore in a different season. U-Tapao, with 3,505 m, offers the longest runway in the country outside the capital, a few hours by road from the Gulf.

The right call depends on the whole programme, not only on the arrival point. That is precisely the question our teams ask first.

Arranging your flight to or from Koh Samui

The Bangkok to Koh Samui sector takes about an hour and sits on a light jet. From Singapore, allow in the order of two and a half hours; from Hong Kong, about four.

For a direct arrival from Europe or the Gulf, the 2,100 m runway makes a stop necessary in practice, most often in Bangkok, followed by a second sector.
