Saint-Tropez La Môle Airfield (LTT): Private Jet Conditions

La Môle airfield (LTT / LFTZ) is the closest runway to Saint-Tropez, 15 km from the village according to its operator, with a 1,071 m strip set among hills. Every jet counts as a "group 1" aircraft under the AIP: the operator must send a file to the DSAC Sud-Est, France's regional civil aviation safety office, one month before the first flight, and the captain must have flown a reconnaissance flight with an instructor within the previous six months. Flights from outside the Schengen area are only possible from 1 July to 15 October. IBC Aviation checks these conditions before proposing an aircraft to or from La Môle.

Every jet is a group 1 aircraft

The AIP places in group 1 every jet, single or multi-engine, as well as multi-engine turboprops and piston aircraft with more than 9 passenger seats or a maximum take-off weight above 5,700 kg. For these aircraft, La Môle can only be used once the DSAC Sud-Est has acknowledged a file sent one month beforehand.

The crew is covered too. The captain must have completed the training set out in the ministerial order and, within the six months before a first flight at La Môle, flown a reconnaissance flight at the controls with an instructor, on the aircraft type or class used. A jet cannot simply be booked for La Môle the day before with any operator: we steer the search towards operators whose crews already hold the qualification, which narrows the choice in high season.

A single-engine turboprop such as the Pilatus PC-12, limited to nine passengers and below 5,700 kg, falls outside group 1. It escapes both obligations, though not the airfield's other rules.

931 metres to land on runway 06

The runway is 1,071 m long, but a displaced threshold cuts the landing distance to 931 m on runway 06. On runway 24, aircraft get the full 1,071 m, with an approach path indicator set at 4 degrees, steeper than the usual 3 degrees and mandatory for every landing in that direction. No runway end safety area is provided. The AIP also warns of high ground around the airfield, which can hide the runway on the downwind leg.

Payload is therefore calculated case by case: depending on heat, wind and runway direction, an aircraft admitted on paper may have to carry fewer passengers or less fuel. Outside published hours, instrument procedures are prohibited.

Hours, customs and the season

The airfield opens from 08:00 to 19:00 between 1 April and 31 October, and from 09:00 to 17:00 from November to March, local time, with earlier opening possible on request. A flight to or from the Schengen area needs 24 hours' notice and a general declaration. A non-Schengen flight, from London, Geneva or Dubai for instance, is only accepted from 1 July to 15 October, between 09:00 and 19:00; the rest of the year, the arrival goes through an airport with permanent customs.

The operator states around 8,000 movements a year and an occupancy rate of 85 to 90% from Easter to Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez in late September or early October. Sky Valet, on the route du Canadel, handles arrivals and ground services. In the height of summer, requests go in early.

Which aircraft for La Môle

The aircraft most often seen on this kind of airfield are turboprops and very light or light jets with short-field performance, subject to the operator's calculations and a qualified crew. Beyond that, for a larger group or a long-range aircraft, the flight lands elsewhere on the Riviera.
