Haneda or Narita: the real trade-off

Both Tokyo airports accept business aviation, and each imposes its own constraint.

• Haneda (HND): closest to the centre, open 24 hours a day to business aviation, but the most constrained environment in Japan. Daytime slots, between 08h00 and 23h00 local, almost never come free. Parking is capped at four nights for non-scheduled flights, and general aviation has no hangarage there.
• Narita (NRT): more flexible on slots, with operating hours from 06h00 to 23h00 and hangarage available, at the cost of a longer road transfer into central Tokyo.

A slot is required on arrival and on departure at both platforms. It is requested several weeks ahead, and the pressure is such that some operators reposition the aircraft to regional airports between sectors rather than tie up a parking stand in Tokyo. The calculation is made case by case.

In practice we request Haneda where the date allows and prepare Narita in parallel. It is the only way to hold a fixed date on this sector, and it means starting both applications together rather than waiting for the first to be refused before launching the second.

Which aircraft for six hours

The duration puts the sector beyond the mid-size categories at full load. A heavy jet covers it with a stand-up cabin, a rest area and a hold accessible in flight, which counts on a night sector.

Indicative rates start at EUR 6,500 per flight hour, a figure that covers the aircraft, the crew, the fuel, the ground handling and the navigation charges, and that holds whatever departure hour is chosen since Haneda operates around the clock for business aviation. Fifteen visa-free days, and an end date

Thai nationals enter Japan without a visa for fifteen days, but the exemption is not permanent. Its current renewal runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, and it applies only to holders of a biometric passport compliant with ICAO standards. Without that passport, a visa is required before departure, failing which entry is refused on arrival.

When the sector tightens

Three periods saturate the route. The cherry blossom, from late March to early April, coincides with the end of the Thai school holidays. The ski season, December to February, feeds the sectors towards Niseko and Hakuba. The maple autumn, in November, fills Kyoto and the Kansai.

Across those three windows, Haneda's sixteen daily slots fill well before the aircraft do, which reverses the usual logic of charter, where machine availability is what governs. Booking is measured in weeks. Not days.
