The 2025 ranking of Thai outbound destinations puts Tokyo first, ahead of Singapore and Shanghai, the latter two having displaced Hong Kong and Osaka. The movement is substantial. International travel by Thai nationals rose 45 % in the first half of 2025, with no sign of slowing.

Japan stands alone. By the end of September 2025, 815,800 Thai visitors had travelled there, up 8.5 %, making Thailand the largest ASEAN source market for Japanese tourism. No other destination comes close.

An underlying shift accompanies those figures. The affluent Thai traveller increasingly chooses Asian destinations offering a level of service equivalent to long-haul, for a fraction of the flight time. Six hours to Tokyo rather than twelve to London. At comparable standard.

The passport draws the map

This is the variable flight comparison sites ignore, and it decides everything. The Department of Consular Affairs lists 35 countries and territories reachable without a visa, for stays of 14 to 365 days.

The consequence is clear. A departure towards Asia is decided the day before. A departure towards Europe is planned around a consular appointment, which moves the constraint entirely onto the administrative side. The full detail is on our Thai passport and visa-free travel page.

The Thai calendar commands departures

The year 2027 carries twenty-two public holidays and nine long weekends, the longest running from 17 to 20 July for Asarnha Bucha and the start of the Buddhist Lent. Songkran occupies 13 to 15 April.

Those windows concentrate demand on destinations reachable in three or four hours, where the passport opens the door with no application, which is why the same names come back from one long weekend to the next. Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali, Da Nang, Siem Reap and the Maldives are among the most requested. The Buddhist festival dates follow the lunar calendar and are confirmed by the Cabinet closer to the year.

Three reasons to travel that scheduled flights serve badly

Beyond holidays, three motives recur in our Thai files, and each imposes its own constraint.

Pilgrimage. The four holy places of Buddhism are spread between Nepal and northern India. Each now has an airport. The circuit goes from ten days by road to three or four days by air, which brings it within reach of the family's elders.

The school return. Swiss and British boarding schools all start back inside the same five-day window in early September, which makes the boarding school run a slot problem more than a flight problem.

Medical assessment. Singapore, Tokyo and the United States receive Thai clients seeking a second opinion, on dates that are rarely negotiable. The calendar is set by the medical institution. Never by the traveller.

Which aircraft for which distance

The two to four hours that cover South-East Asia sit on a midsize, sometimes a light jet for a small group. Seoul and Tokyo call for a heavy jet.

Europe non-stop belongs to the ultra long range category, the only one capable of eleven to thirteen hours at full load. The alternative is a stop in Dubai, where we have an office. That opens access to more common aircraft, often more available, and at a lower hourly cost.
